A big start on the very first day of Olympic 2021. It was a great start for India on the first day by winning the silver medal in weightlifting by women. The history has been made by Mirabai Charu in Tokyo. She made India proud in the whole arena with her strength and sportsmanship. A new achievement has been added up in the achievement basket of India. While badminton, hockey, Table Tennis, shooting, and boxing campaigns also begin. On the other hand, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to win a tennis singles match by defeating Denis Istomin since Leander Paes in the 1996 Atlanta games.
Sourabh Chaudhary finished seventh in the 10m air pistol final. In archery, the pair of Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jhadav progressed to the quarters in the mixed team event. Then the men’s hockey team defeated New Zealand by 3-2 and in women’s hockey India was beaten comprehensively by the Netherlands by 1-5. In badminton B sai Praneth lost but Satwiksairaj reddy and Shirag Shetty defeated Chinese Taipei and chi-lin wang in their men’s double. Table tennis players Sharnath kamal and Manika Batra lost from Chinese Taipei, lin Yun-Ju, and cheng i-ching in the mixed doubles. In boxing, Vikas Krishan bowed out in his round of 32 welterweight bouts against japan’s Sewonrets Okazawa.

WEIGHTLIFTING- Mirabai Chanu ended India’s 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Olympics by clinching a silver medal in the 49kg category to open the country’s account here on Saturday. The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg) to better Karnam Malleswari’s bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With this, she exorcised the ghosts of the 2016 Games where she had failed to log a single legitimate clean and jerk lift. The gold went to china’s Hou Zhihui with an effort of 210kg (94kg+116kg), while Windy Cantika Aisah of Indonesia took home the bronze with an effort of 194kg (84kg+110kg).
Considered her weakness in the run-up to the marquee event, Chanu attempted 84kg in her first snatch attempt. The Manipuri took her time and cleanly heaved the barbell. She lifted 87kg in her next attempt and raised the weight to 89kg, which was one 1kg more than her personal best of 88kg that she had lifted at the national championship last year. However, she was unable to better her personal best and settled for 87kg in the snatch event only behind leader Zhihui, who created a new Olympic record with an effort of 94kg. The Chinese lifter also holds the world mark (96kg) in the category. In the clean jerk, Chanu, the world record holder in the section, lifted 110kg and 115kg in the first two attempts.
However, she was unable to raise 117kg in her final attempt but it was enough to fetch her a medal and open India’s account. The diminutive Manipuri broke down after realising that she has secured a medal and hugged her coach in jubilation. She later broke into dance too to celebrate the historic podium finish.
SHOOTING- Saurabh Chaudhary couldn’t live up to his early promise, finishing seventh in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Final, at the Tokyo Olympics on July 24. The 19-year-old settled for a total score of 137.4 and faced an early elimination. It was in stark contrast to his performance to his qualification stage, where he registered scores of 95, 98, 98, 100, 98, and 97. During the qualification round, he was also accompanied by Abhishek Verma, who failed to make the cut.
MIXED TEAM QUARTER- India experienced a perfect start to their archery campaign at the Olympics on Saturday as the mixed duo of Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav bounced back from behind to knock out Chinese Taipei and book a quarterfinal berth. Trailing 1-3 after they lost the first set by one point, Team India needed to win the third set to save their fortunes and the duo, who were shooting together at the international level for the first time, showed perfect coordination to seal the issue 5-3 in style
HOCKEY MEN’S TEAM- Harmanpreet Singh scored a brace and veteran goalkeeper P R Sreejesh stood like a wall in the closing minutes as the Indian men’s hockey team overcame a late surge from New Zealand to eke out a close 3-2 win in its opening Olympic Games match here on Saturday.
Harmanpreet (26th and 33rd minutes) scored a double for India, while Rupinder Pal Singh (10th) was the other goal-getter for the eight-time former champions, currently ranked fourth in the world, in the Pool A match at the Oi hockey stadium here. For eighth-ranked New Zealand, Kane Russell scored from a penalty corner in the sixth minute before Stephen Jenness (43rd minute) reduced the margin of defeat later in the match.
WOMEN’S TEAM- The Rani Rampal-led Indian women’s national field hockey team (nicknamed the Nabhvarna) were thrashed 5-1 against World no.1 Netherlands. Rani Rampal was the only goalscorer in the first quadrant but Netherlands players gained momentum after a goal in the third quadrant opened floodgates for Netherland women against India.
WOMEN AIR RIFLE- India’s shooting campaign at the Tokyo Olympics got off to a disappointing start as World No. 1 Elavenil Valarivan and world-record holder Apurvi Chandela finished well outside the qualifying spots in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification event on Saturday.
Elavenial Valarivan finished 16th in the 50-woman qualification field with a score of 626.5. Only the top 8 shooters from the highly competitive field qualify for the final and Elavenil missed the mark by 2 points as Russia’s Galasina Anastasiia took the final qualifying spot with 628.5.
TENNIS SINGLES- Sumit Nagal on Saturday became only the third Indian to win a men’s singles match at an Olympics edition and the first in 25 years when he edged past Denis Istomin in a three-setter at the Tokyo Games. Zeeshan Ali was the first Indian to win a singles match at the 1988 Seoul Games when he beat Victo Caballero from Paraguay. After that, the legendary Leander Paes won the historic men’s singles bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games, beating Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni.
No Indian could win a singles match after Paes’ heroic feat even as Somdev Devvarman and Vishnu Vardhan competed at the 2012 Games in London but did not manage to cross the first round hurdle. The 23-year-old Nagal, who did not come into the Games in his best form, had a break opportunity in the sixth game of the opening set but could not convert. The Indian, though, did not squander the opportunity when Istomin was serving to stay in the set.

TABLE TENNIS- Manika Batra vs Tin-Tin Ho: Manika Batra has won Round 1 of women’s singles after defeating Britain’s Tin-Tin Ho 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, and 11-9. It was an easy win for Batra, After a poor display in the Mixed doubles against Chinese Taipei’s Lin and Cheng in which they dominated the game throughout, Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal could not even come close. The match ended in 4 straight games as India lost – 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4.
BOXING- India at Tokyo Olympics: Vikas Krishnan stunned in 1st Round itself, Japan’s Okazawa completely shocks Indian: India’s most experienced boxers Vikas Krishan has lost out in the opening round of Tokyo Olympics. Vikas playing his 3rd Olympic was tipped to win a medal this time but was left shell-shocked as local boxer Mensah Okazawa stunned him in the first round. The boxer from Japan won by a 5-0 margin.
