A woman from Khamdong, Gangtok, fell victim to an online scam, losing ₹5.35 lakh to a fraudster posing as an Australian citizen.
The scam began after the victim accepted a Facebook friend request from an individual named Raj Khurana on February 17. After gaining her trust, the fraudster claimed he was detained at an Indian airport and needed financial help. Believing the story, she transferred the amount through an IJPI transaction.
Realizing she had been deceived, she lodged a complaint at Sadar Police Station. A case has been registered under multiple sections of BNS 2023 and the IT Act. An investigation is underway to trace the culprits, and authorities have urged the public to stay alert against such online frauds.
