Sikkim witnessed an unusual surge in temperatures today, with the state capital Gangtok recording a daytime high of 32°C — well above its seasonal average. The unseasonal heat has taken many residents by surprise, especially in a region known for its cooler climate.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), partly sunny skies dominated much of the day, with rising humidity levels by afternoon. As a result, a thundershower alert has been issued for several parts of East and South Sikkim, including Namchi and Pakyong.
Other areas in the state also reported higher-than-usual temperatures. Jorethang recorded 33°C, Rangpo soared to 35°C — the highest in the state — while North Sikkim’s popular tourist destination Lachung remained relatively cooler at 21°C.
Meteorologists have attributed this temperature spike to a temporary shift in weather patterns, but say conditions may ease slightly with the possibility of evening showers over the next two days.
