The State Election Commission, Sikkim has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming urban local body elections in Sikkim, covering nine municipal bodies across the state. With the issuance of the notification, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all concerned areas.
Addressing a press conference in Gangtok, State Election Commissioner K.C. Lepcha stated that the Commission has completed all necessary preparations to ensure the smooth and fair conduct of the elections. He informed that the last date for filing nominations is March 30, while scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on April 1. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until April 4.
Polling for all nine urban local bodies is scheduled to take place on April 24, 2026. The counting of votes will be held on April 25 from 8:00 AM onwards, and the results are expected to be declared on the same day, completing the election process.
Earlier, the Urban Development Department had issued a notification regarding seat reservations on March 19. The tenure of the existing municipal bodies is set to expire on May 5, necessitating the timely conduct of elections.
Following the delimitation and restructuring of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation, the number of seats has been increased from 19 to 21. Additionally, two new Nagar Panchayats have been introduced in Soreng and Pakyong districts.
The elections will be conducted across 63 municipal wards through 121 polling stations, with a total of 93,692 registered voters, including 47,170 men and 46,527 women. Special provisions have been made for senior citizens above 80 years and persons with disabilities, allowing them to vote from home.
The Commission has urged all eligible voters to participate actively and exercise their democratic right.
