5.5-Magnitude Earthquake hit Nepal, Tremors in Sikkim

A powerful 5.5 -magnitude earthquake struck Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district early on Friday morning, February 28, 2025, at 2:51 AM local time. The epicenter was located near Bhairavkunda, approximately 65 km east of Kathmandu, along the Kodari Highway.

The tremors were strongly felt across the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding regions, including parts of India and Tibet.Residents reported being awakened by the quake, with many rushing outdoors in panic. Ganesh Nepali, a senior official in Sindhupalchowk, described the experience: “It shook us from our sleep strongly. We rushed out of our home. People have now returned home. We have not received any report of damage or injuries so far.”

As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. Authorities are conducting assessments to determine the full extent of the impact. Given Nepal’s history of devastating earthquakes, including the 7.8-magnitude quake in 2015, officials have urged residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks.

The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre has confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude and location. The quake’s depth was recorded at 10 km.

In neighboring India, particularly in Bihar, residents reported feeling the tremors. However, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received from these areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are advising the public to stay informed through official channels. Emergency response teams are on standby to provide assistance if needed.
