Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, turned 88 today

Tibetan spiritual leader and the world-renowned religious personality, His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama, turned 88 years on Thursday, 6 July 2023.

Following the inauguration ceremony in the morning, Central Tibetan Administration hosted the official 88th birthday ceremony of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the courtyard of Thekchen Choeling Tsuglakhang with a gathering of mass people.

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi wished His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 88th birthday.

Sikkim’s Chief Minister Shri PS Golay took to his Facebook page to convey his warmest greetings to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. CM Golay Posted:

On behalf of the Sikkimese people, I extend my warmest wishes to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) on the revered occasion of his 88th birth anniversary.

An internationally respected spiritual leader and Nobel laureate, his lifelong commitment and outstanding contribution to the promotion of non-violence, human rights, and religious tolerance resonate throughout the world.

He has inspired millions of people belonging to diverse faith and non-faith traditions around the globe through messages of peace, compassion, and non-violence, and we admire his dedication to the service of humanity and promoting a universal religion of human kindness.

On this special day, I pray for his long life and wish that the light of his wisdom shine upon us and guide us in our lives. May his valuable presence and teachings serve as an inspiration for all people and sentient beings.

As part of the global celebration of the 88th birthday of His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, Twitterati poured in wishes for His Holiness on his joyous day since today morning.

Likewise, other Chief Ministers of the Indian state, State Ministers and Ambassadors took their official Facebook and Twitter accounts and showered overwhelming greetings to Dalai Lama.

As always on the 6th of July, Tibetans in Tibet, despite the draconian surveillance and restrictions on every aspect of their lives, mark His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday through symbolic and creative gestures.

His real name is Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of Tibet was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet. 

At the age of two the child, who was named Lhamo Dhondup at that time was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso.  The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet.  Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity.

He is currently residing in Dharmashala India.
