: Bridge Collapse in Vadodara
A section of a 43-year-old bridge collapsed over the Mahisagar River in Gujarat’s Vadodara district, leading to the deaths of at least 10 people and injuries to several others.
The collapse occurred at dawn, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the river below. Among the deceased are three members of the same family. Nine others have been hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries, and authorities fear that three more individuals may still be missing.
Vadodara Superintendent of Police Rohan Anand confirmed the current toll and said that search operations are ongoing. “Rescue teams from the NDRF and SDRF are at the site, combing the waters for possible survivors,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene as the bridge gave way suddenly, causing vehicles to crash into the river. Local residents were the first to respond, rushing to help the victims even before official teams arrived.
The bridge, built more than four decades ago, had reportedly shown signs of wear, and questions are now being raised about its maintenance. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
The Gujarat state government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and has promised full medical support for those injured. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed deep sorrow over the incident and directed officials to expedite rescue and relief efforts.
