Centre Sanctions ₹555.70 Cr for Sikkim Recovery
The Central Government has approved ₹555.70 crore for Sikkim to aid in recovery and reconstruction following the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that struck the state in October 2023. The approval was granted by a High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This funding aims to restore essential infrastructure and strengthen disaster resilience in Sikkim.
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India disaster-resilient, the Ministry of Home Affairs has been taking proactive measures for effective disaster management. Alongside the allocation for Sikkim, the committee also approved ₹1,604.39 crore for five states—Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Kerala—under the “Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services” scheme.
The Central Government has also released ₹19,074.80 crore to 28 states under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and ₹3,229.35 crore to 16 states under the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) in the current financial year, reinforcing disaster preparedness across the country.
Sikkim’s allocation highlights the government’s commitment to helping the state rebuild and recover from last year’s natural calamity.
