"Northeast Woman's Death Lacks Attention"
A young woman from Assam’s Dima Hasao district, whose lifeless body was discovered in Uttarakhand days after she went missing from Delhi.
Rosmita Hojai, a resident of Sontila village under Haflong Police Station, had travelled to Delhi to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination — a journey of hope that ended in unthinkable tragedy. Reported missing on June 5, her body was later found in the Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand, hundreds of kilometres from where she was last seen.
The confirmation of her death came from Dima Hasao’s Chief Executive Member (CEM) Debolal Gorlosa in an emotional Facebook post on Tuesday. “It is with a heavy heart I share that Miss Rosmita Hojai, a resident of Sontilla Hojai, who had been missing since 5th June in Delhi, has been found dead today in Uttarakhand,” Gorlosa wrote. “This is an unthinkable loss.”
According to reports, Rosmita had arrived in Rishikesh on June 6 with two male companions — one of them identified as her former classmate Hemant Sharma from Haryana. The trio had planned a camping trip to Shivpuri. However, by the evening, the two men claimed she went missing, triggering a search.
Local accounts later surfaced stating that a woman was seen drowning near the campsite. While the police are still investigating, many unanswered questions surround the incident — especially how and why Rosmita ended up so far from Delhi, and under such suspicious circumstances.
The absence of national outrage over the death of a young woman from the Northeast has sparked anguish and frustration among many. Her family, village, and the people of Dima Hasao are demanding justice.
CEM Gorlosa has called for urgent legal action: “I strongly urge the concerned authorities to take immediate and strict legal action against the two individuals involved in this horrifying incident. Justice must be served. Such crimes must not go unpunished.”
