Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Postponed in Sikkim Following Demise of Sanu Lama

The Nepali Sahitya Parishad Sikkim has decided to postpone the main celebration of the 211th Bhanu Jayanti, originally scheduled for July 13, following the demise of renowned writer and Padma Shri awardee Sanu Lama.

The celebration will now be limited to a floral tribute at Bhanu Udyan, while all major literary and cultural programmes—including the felicitation ceremony at Manan Kendra—have been cancelled. The awards and honours originally planned for Bhanu Jayanti will now be presented on Language Recognition Day, the Parishad confirmed.

An emergency meeting of the Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee was convened today at the Parishad’s office in Jeewan Thing Marg, chaired by President Hari Dhungel. The meeting expressed profound grief over the passing of Sanu Lama, who was not only a towering figure in Indian Nepali literature but also a former president of the Parishad. Members paid homage to his enduring legacy with heartfelt tributes.

The Parishad has urged literary institutions and well-wishers to join in remembering Lama’s contributions as a celebrated short story writer, lyricist, and literary leader.
