Renowned Nepali Author Sanu Lama Passes Away at 88 in Siliguri

The Indian Nepali literary world mourns the loss of one of its most revered figures, Sanu Lama, who passed away early this morning at 6:30 AM at Neotia Nursing Home, Siliguri. He was 88.

Born in 1939 as Garud Singh Lama, he was affectionately known by his literary name, Sanu Lama. A Padma Shri awardee, Lama’s prolific writing and deep contributions to Nepali literature earned him wide acclaim, both in Sikkim and across the Indian subcontinent.

According to family members, Lama had been battling health complications due to a cold and chest infection. He was initially admitted to STNM Hospital in Gangtok, but as his condition worsened, he was referred to Siliguri for specialized treatment. Despite medical efforts, he passed away during treatment in the early hours today.

Sanu Lama’s writings have left an enduring legacy in Nepali literature, reflecting deep human emotions, culture, and societal realities. He was a central figure in shaping modern Indian Nepali literature and served as an inspiration to generations of writers and poets.

His body is expected to be brought to Gangtok later today, where final rites will be performed.
