Seminar on “One Nation, One Election” Held in Gangtok, Sikkim

A seminar on “One Nation, One Election” was organized by One Nation, One Election, Sikkim at Zero Point, Gangtok. The event brought together eminent speakers, political leaders, and students to discuss the feasibility, advantages, and challenges of implementing simultaneous elections for both national and state legislatures in India.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Anirban Ganguly, Chairman and Trustee of the Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Research Foundation, New Delhi. Dr. Ganguly elaborated on the benefits of the proposed reform, emphasizing how a unified electoral process could enhance governance efficiency, reduce election-related expenses, minimize voter fatigue, and ensure greater political stability across the country.

Among the distinguished guests present at the seminar were DR Thapa, President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sikkim, and Bhim Rawat, President of the Press Club of Sikkim. Their participation added political and media perspectives to the discussions, highlighting the importance of structured electoral reforms in India.

The seminar also saw the active participation of students from Manipal University and Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk. The students engaged in a thought-provoking Q&A session, raising pertinent questions about the practicality of the “One Nation, One Election” concept, its logistical execution, and the constitutional amendments required for its implementation.

The interactive discussion seem insightful exchanges between the panelists and the attendees, offering diverse viewpoints on the potential impact of a unified electoral system in India. The event concluded with a consensus on the need for further deliberations and policy discussions before implementing such a significant electoral reform.
