An Alternative road linking Tsomgo lake and Nathula border which route through Gangtok Sikkim named as ‘Narendra Modi Marg’ by Sikkim Governor Shri Ganga Prasad. The older route is known as Jawahar Lal Nehru Road (JN Road).
The road was inauguration by the Governor of Sikkim and Gangtok MLA Yong T Lepacha who’s also MLA of Gangtok from Bharatiya Janta Party Seat at 51 Kyongasala gram panchayat unit (GPU) with 19.51 km which was an operational year ago, officials said.
DB Chauhan, President of Bharatiya Janta Party Sikkim Branch said on Twitter “Pleased to join Hon’ble Governor Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad Ji during the inauguration ceremony of Narendra Modi Marg at Kyongnosla GPU. The newly constructed alternative alignment road towards Changu lake has been named after Honourable PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji.”
IK Rasaily, the panchayat of the area, said a proposal to rename the road after prime minister Narendra Modi was unanimously passed in the gram sabha which was held December 20, 2021.
This Narendra Modi Marg will also reduce the distance between Gangtok and Tsomgo lake by 15 km. It will also boost tourism and employment opportunities for the local youth of the region whereas change and Nathula attrach lakhs number of visitors every year.
There is another reason for naming this road after him is he handled the Doklam Standoff so well, which protected the people of the region and 80% of the Doklam area’s youth has been joined the Indian Army. They also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped them get ration during the Pandemic.
The event was attended by the Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prashad, BJP unit president DB Chauhan and Gangtok area MLA YT Lepcha. In the event, the Governor also announced a sum of Rs. 5 lakh for the development of 4th Mile Junior High School, JN Road.
