TOKYO OLYMPICS 2020 DAY-7, A FANTASTIC DAY FOR TEAM INDIAN

DAY-7 PREVIEW IN TOKYO OLYMPICS 2020 :

It was a fantastic day for team India with many good achievements in Tokyo Olympics 2020. The players are one step closer to increasing India’s medal tally. Lovlina Borgohain assured India of their second medal with her unbeatable performance. After winning the quarterfinal clash. PV Sindhu claimed a 21-13, 22-20 win over Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in her quarterfinal match. Whereas our Indian hockey women’s team got their first win, beating Ireland 1-0 and added one win in India’s tally. On the other hand, Deepika Kumari held nervous in a shoot-off against Ksenia Perova to reserve a quarterfinal slot. 

On the other hand, Avinash Sable bettered his national record. MP Jabir and Dutee Chand also failed to make up to 100m finals. And in shooting Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat got eliminated from this event. The Indian men’s hockey team finished in the second spot

-ABOUT THE MATCHES

-BOXING:

Boxer Lovlina Borgohain reserved India of their second medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 today. She won her quarter-finals match by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen. All the boxers in the semi-finals will get a medal but its color will be decided after the results. Lovlina defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin 4-1 in the last eight bouts by split decision. It is great news for team India, they will get their second medal in Tokyo Olympics since Mirabai Charu.

Lovlina Borgohain (born 2 October 1997) is an Indian amateur woman boxer. She won a bronze medal at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Later, the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships as well. She won the gold medal at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi. Further, a silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati. Borgohain secured 3rd rank in the 69 kg Welterweight category. She became the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. Significantly, the second boxer from the state to represent the country after Shiva Thapa. In 2020, she became the sixth person from Assam to receive Arjuna Award.

After Mary Kom, Lovlina is the second woman from India to win the medal in Olympics. Lovlina will face Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli in the semis on 4 August to decide the medal for India.

-BADMINTON:

Reigning world champion P V Sindhu kept India’s hopes of winning a first-ever Olympic gold in badminton alive. She reached the semifinals of women’s singles with a win over world no 5 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi here on Friday. The 26-year-old Indian had won a silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She defended brilliantly and rode on her attack to outclass the fourth-seeded Yamaguchi 21-13 22-20 in a 56-minute quarterfinal. She will next face the other quarterfinal winner between Thailand’s Ratchanok Inthanon and Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying.

-WOMEN’S HOCKEY:

Navneet Kaur scored a late winner as the Indian women’s hockey team kept its quarterfinals hopes alive. They secured a 1-0 win over Ireland in a must-win penultimate pool match here on Friday.

After goal-less three quarters in which India dominated but failed to breach the Irish defense led by goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran. Navneet finally found the back of the net in the 57th minute to bring smiles to the Indian faces. Needing a win to keep their hopes alive after three consecutive losses, India had to wait anxiously for 57 minutes. Despite being the dominant team on display and creating innumerable scoring opportunities. India had chances galore from the opening whistle. They got as many as 14 penalty corners but failed to utilise even a single one of them.

-SHOOTING:

World number one archer Deepika Kumari held her nerves to pip former world champion Ksenia Perova in a one-arrow shoot-off. She advanced to the women’s individual quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympic 2020 Games here on Friday. Locked 5-5 after the regulation five-setter, the 27-year-old Indian delivered a perfect 10. Hitting the bull’s eye, to topple the Russian, a team silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Starting off the one-arrow shoot-off, the Russian crumbled under pressure as she misfired a 7. While a composed Deepika sealed the issue 6-5 (10-7) without any fuss.

India’s Avinash Sable shattered his own 3000m steeplechase national record. Yet he failed to qualify for the finals. Despite clocking a better time than the top three in another heat race of the Olympic Games here on Friday. Sable clocked 8 minutes 18.12 seconds in heat number 2 to finish seventh. It was better than his earlier national record of 8:20.20, set during the Federation Cup in March. The men’s hockey team beat Japan 5-3 in their last match and reserved their place in the 2nd group.
