  • New govt in Kabul should ‘thoroughly dissociate’ from all terrorist groups, Xi tells Putin.
  • Mexico welcomes 124 Afghan media workers, their families.
  • Taliban appoint ex-Guantanamo detainee as ‘Defence Minister’

Mumbai, India — August 27, 2021 — Chinese President Xi Jinping told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that Beijing stands ready to strengthen communication with Moscow and the broader international community on the Afghan issue and called for an inclusive government in Kabul which “thoroughly dissociate” itself from all terrorist groups.

Mexico has welcomed 124 Afghan media workers and their families after they fled Kabul following the Taliban takeover. The group of evacuees arrived in Mexico City aboard a Qatar Emiri Air Force flight in the early hours of Wednesday. In a statement, Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said the Afghans who arrived in the country had worked for “various media outlets” and sought Mexican visas, citing the Taliban’s hostility towards journalists.

Above all, the Taliban have appointed Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir as the ‘acting defence minister’ of Afghanistan, Qatar-based news agency Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday. A former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir, served six years (2001-2007) in the Cuban prison formerly operated by US forces. Zakir was among the Taliban fighters photographed inside the Afghan Presidential Palace in Kabul following the Taliban takeover on August 15.
