After a six-year hiatus, the sacred Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Sikkim marked a historic moment today as the first batch of pilgrims was formally flagged off by the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, at Nathu La on June 20, 2025.
Prior to the departure, the Governor interacted with the pilgrims and extended his best wishes for their health and a safe journey.
Flagging off the first group of pilgrims, the Governor described the reopening of this historic route as a symbol of international friendship and the revival of Indian spiritual traditions, reflecting the deep faith of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain communities. On the occasion, he also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for making this possible. The Governor remarked:
“It is a moment of immense pride for the state of Sikkim that this historic and spiritual journey is once again progressing through its sacred soil.”
He further thanked the Government of Sikkim, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Indian Army for their support in facilitating this initiative.
The first batch comprises 33 pilgrims, accompanied by two escorts and one doctor. After undergoing mandatory medical examinations, the pilgrims completed a two-phase acclimatization process to prepare for high-altitude conditions — first at the 18th Mile point and subsequently at Sherathang, where they adapted to the natural environment.
The flagging-off ceremony at Nathu La was attended by state ministers, MLAs, senior officials of the Government of Sikkim, ITBP and Indian Army officers. Arrangements were also made for a warm welcome by Chinese officials at the border, from where the pilgrims will continue their spiritual journey towards Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.
The entire management of this Yatra has been undertaken by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, ensuring a smooth and safe experience for all participants.
