Governor Om Prakash Mathur completed two years in office on Friday, with a commemorative programme held at Ashirvad Hall, Lok Bhawan, attended by ministers, legislators, senior officials and other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor expressed gratitude to the people of Sikkim for their warmth and support during his tenure. Reflecting on his public life since 1972, he said his approach to governance has always centred on staying connected with people at the grassroots level through regular visits to villages and Gram Panchayat Units.
Marking the occasion, Governor Mathur announced a new initiative to honour district academic toppers. He noted that five out of six district toppers were girls, describing the achievement as a strong indicator of women’s empowerment and educational progress in the State.
The Governor also highlighted Sikkim’s achievements, including its status as India’s first fully organic State and its environmental initiatives. He praised the State’s peaceful atmosphere, low crime rate, social harmony and effective policing, while reaffirming his commitment to work closely with the State Government for Sikkim’s continued development.
Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly M.N. Sherpa congratulated the Governor on completing two years in office and commended his efforts in environmental conservation, support for border security forces and making Lok Bhawan more accessible to the public. Ministers Sonam Lama and Arun Kumar Upreti also lauded the Governor’s leadership, humility and contribution to public service.
During the programme, Secretary to the Governor Jitendra Singh Raje presented a report highlighting key initiatives undertaken over the past two years, including the adoption of Chungthang village, promotion of border tourism, electrification of border areas, support for entrepreneurs, women’s empowerment programmes and educational initiatives.
The event also featured cultural performances representing the Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali communities. A felicitation ceremony honoured Class X district toppers, security personnel, tourism staff, progressive farmers, sanitation workers and Lok Bhawan employees for their contributions and dedicated service.
