India and Indonesia have significantly strengthened their strategic partnership with the signing of 14 agreements covering defence, maritime security, critical minerals and economic cooperation.
The development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, where he held talks with President Prabowo Subianto. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence and maritime collaboration amid evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
A key highlight of the partnership is Indonesia’s decision to acquire India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking another major defence export success for New Delhi. The deal, reportedly valued at around $630 million, is expected to enhance Indonesia’s defence capabilities while strengthening India’s position as a defence manufacturing and export hub.
In another significant development, Indonesia became the first foreign customer for India’s Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile through an agreement between Indonesia’s Republikorp and India’s Bharat Dynamics Limited.
The two countries also agreed to deepen maritime security cooperation. Indonesia has posted its first liaison officer to the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), hosted by the Indian Navy, to improve maritime domain awareness and coordination across the region.
Addressing the Indonesian Parliament, Prime Minister Modi described the relationship as a partnership built on trust and shared commitment towards peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The latest agreements are being viewed as a major step towards enhancing bilateral ties, strengthening regional security cooperation and expanding India’s defence footprint in Southeast Asia.
