"AI Event in Sikkim Gains Central Support"

Sikkim is poised to become a hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancement after the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology responded positively to a proposal from Lok Sabha MP Dr. Indra Hang Subba to host a large-scale AI event in the state. The initiative aims to position Northeast India as a key player in the country’s AI landscape and ensure the region’s active participation in India’s digital future.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has welcomed the proposal, recognizing the strategic importance of promoting AI innovation and skill development in the Northeast. The minister assured that further discussions would take place to evaluate the event’s feasibility and align it with the government’s broader vision of inclusive technological growth.

Dr. Subba emphasized that Northeast India holds significant potential in the AI sector. “A dedicated AI platform in Sikkim will empower the youth, entrepreneurs, and researchers, ensuring their active role in India’s digital transformation,” he said. He added that strengthening human resource capacity in AI would equip individuals with the skills needed to adapt to the rapidly evolving demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

AI is expected to reshape industries and daily life across the globe, making it essential for regions like Sikkim to harness its benefits. With one of the highest literacy rates in India and a growing interest in technology, Sikkim is well-positioned to lead AI adoption and innovation.

If approved, the AI event will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative growth. This initiative is seen as a major step toward making Sikkim a key player in India’s AI-driven future.

US Dollar Won’t Lose Its Crown Anytime Soon, Says NSE MD & CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan

"NSE Chief on Dollar's Unwavering Power"

Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD & CEO, NSE, reaffirmed the enduring dominance of the US dollar at a recent panel discussion in Singapore. He provided deep insights into the evolving financial landscape, the rise of technology-driven capitalism, and the increasing complexities of global markets.

Chauhan redefined conventional perspectives on financial stability, asserting that volatility is not a weakness but an inherent feature of economic progress. He argued that market disruptions often result from geopolitical shifts rather than purely economic factors. “Geopolitics eats economics for breakfast,” he remarked, highlighting how international power struggles are reshaping financial markets in unpredictable ways.

On investor behaviour, Chauhan dispelled the notion that India’s stock market is driven primarily by speculative trading. “Out of 110 million market participants, only 2% actively trade in derivatives. The majority are committed to long-term investing,” he stated, reinforcing the growing culture of disciplined, sustainable investment in India.

One of the most striking themes of his address was the emergence of “Capitalism without capital.” Traditionally, wealth creation depended on large financial investments, but Chauhan pointed out that technological advancements are rewriting the rules. With AI, blockchain, and digital platforms allowing businesses to scale with minimal capital, the economic model is shifting away from traditional capital-intensive structures. He cited India’s booming startup ecosystem and the rise of micro-IPOs as proof that wealth creation is no longer restricted to large financial institutions.

Chauhan also highlighted the increasing threats posed by cyber warfare in financial markets. He revealed that stock exchanges are under relentless attack from cybercriminals, underscoring the importance of digital security in the financial sector. The rise of deepfake technology has further complicated this landscape, with fraudulent videos manipulating investor sentiment and threatening financial integrity. He stressed the need for regulators and institutions to stay ahead of these evolving threats to maintain trust in capital markets.

Regarding the future of global currencies, Chauhan stated that despite speculation about alternatives, the US dollar will continue its dominance. “After World War II, the US meticulously positioned the dollar as the world’s reserve currency, and no other country is currently equipped to take on that role,” he observed. While economic shifts may challenge US influence, the fundamental structure supporting the dollar remains intact, making it the default choice for global trade and investment.

Chauhan’s address painted a picture of a rapidly changing financial world where technology, cybersecurity, and geopolitical manoeuvring are redefining market dynamics. While uncertainty prevails, he emphasized that those who anticipate and adapt to these changes will be the ones shaping the future of global finance.

CAP Opposes New ₹50 Tourist Entry Fee, Calls for Immediate Rollback

"Sikkim's ₹50 Tourist Fee Under Fire"

The Citizens Action Party (CAP) has strongly opposed the Sikkim government’s decision to introduce a ₹50 Tourism Sustainable Development Fund for tourists, warning that it could negatively affect the state’s tourism industry. CAP has called on the government to withdraw the fee, arguing that it would discourage domestic tourists and harm the local economy.

During a press conference, CAP leaders criticized the government’s move, comparing it to Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). However, they pointed out that while Bhutan imposes the fee only on foreign tourists, Sikkim is extending it to Indian citizens, which could deter domestic visitors.

The party highlighted that tourists visiting restricted areas such as North Sikkim, the Silk Route, and Nathula already pay permit fees and other charges. Additional costs, including parking and wildlife fees, are already in place, with some wildlife fees reaching up to ₹100. According to CAP, adding a new entry fee would further burden tourists and make Sikkim less attractive as a travel destination.

Mahesh Rai also raised concerns over poor road infrastructure, lack of 24-hour amenities, and inadequate toilet and drinking water facilities in major tourist areas. He warned that unless these issues are addressed, tourists may start preferring other destinations in India with better infrastructure and lower costs.

CAP urged the government to explore alternative ways to generate revenue and promote sustainable tourism without adding financial pressure on visitors. The party also emphasized the need for improved road connectivity and streamlined permits to support the tourism sector.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to infrastructure expansion, regional development, and ensuring seamless mobility for the people of Sikkim. The project, once completed, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and ease daily travel in the area.
