Tsomgo Lake & Nathula Pass Blocked Due to Snowfall Road Open upto 20th Mile
Tourists can travel safely from 3rd Mile to 20th Mile, as the road remains clear for vehicular movement. However, the route beyond 20th Mile leading to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass is currently blocked due to heavy snowfall.
Authorities advise travelers to plan accordingly and stay updated on road conditions before heading towards these destinations. Rescue and clearing operations are underway to restore connectivity.
Three Suicide Cases Reported in Sikkim Within Two Days, Investigations Underway
Sikkim witnessed three separate cases of suicide within 24 hours across different districts, prompting ongoing investigations by authorities.
Namchi District – On Saturday morning, a man was found hanging near his residence in Namchi. Locals alerted authorities, and law enforcement officials conducted an inquest. The body was sent for medico-legal examination before being handed over to the family. Preliminary investigations suggest no foul play, but inquiries are ongoing.
Pakyong District – First Case
On Sunday, another case was reported in Pakyong District, where a man was found deceased near his residence. Authorities conducted an inquest and ruled out foul play so far.
Pakyong District – Second Case
On the same day, another individual was discovered dead near the Rangpo River bank. Preliminary investigations indicate no immediate signs of foul play.
Officials are continuing investigations into all three cases.
A fatal accident occurred in Chungthang, North Sikkim on Monday afternoon when a GREF Tripper vehicle, driven by 36-year-old Santosh Tamang, plunged off a cliff at Rabum. The incident, which took place at around 2:30 PM, resulted in the death of a 7-year-old girl and left two others injured.
According to a written FIR received by authorities from ASI Karma Chutim Lachenpa, who was patrolling the area at the time, local villagers informed him about the accident. Upon reaching the site, Lachenpa discovered that the heavy vehicle, with registration number 24E 74401, had fallen approximately 50 feet below the road. The vehicle crashed into a wooden kutcha house, where three people were inside.
The victims included Mrs. Somit Lepcha, and a 4-year-old child, Nima Lama, both of whom were injured. Tragically, the 7-year-old girl, Passang Doma Sherpa, died at the scene after being crushed by the vehicle. Villagers assisted in rescuing the girl, but she was found lifeless when pulled from the wreckage.
The driver, Santosh Tamang, has been arrested, and a case has been filed under sections 281/125A/125B/106 BNS. Investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to carry out the necessary legal procedures.
Rs 30 Lakh Collected Through Tenant Verification Fees from 30,000 Individuals, SBS MD Phurba Wangdi Bhutia Says Refund Decision Lies with Government
Sikkim’s State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) has collected approximately Rs 30 lakh in tenant verification fees from 30,000 individuals, sparking questions about potential refunds. When asked by the media regarding the possibility of returning the collected amount, Phurba Wangdi Bhutia, the Managing Director of SBS, stated that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the government.
This issue follows the recent labor verification process initiated by the Sikkim Labour Department, which required a fee of Rs 50 for locals and Rs 250 for non-locals. The move caused widespread outrage across the state, with many questioning why locals were subjected to the fee. This confusion was later addressed in a press conference by the Director General of Police (DGP), Akshay Sachdeva, who clarified the matter.
In the meantime, a many number of people were seen outside the State Bank of Sikkim, queuing up to pay their BR receipt , amid growing concerns and confusion over the verification and fee structure.
Sikkim Mandates Labour Card Registration: Employers to Pay ₹2,500 Fine for Unregistered Workers
Sikkim has made labour card registration mandatory for all workers in hotels, shops, and construction sites as part of the Labour Regulations of Employment Conditions of Services 2021. Workers must register at Rangpo check posts or district labour offices.
Employers face a ₹2,500 fine for each unregistered worker, and workers are required to carry their Labour ID cards at all times for verification during inspections. Currently, only 30,000 workers are registered, and authorities are urging others to complete their registration to avoid penalties and legal consequences.
Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang expressed deep spiritual fulfillment after taking a sacred dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj this morning, during the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, a divine event occurring after 144 years.
“Today, I experienced one of the most profound moments of my spiritual journey,” the Chief Minister stated, describing the experience as transformative. The confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati is believed to offer redemption and spiritual elevation, drawing millions of devotees from across the world.
“As I immersed myself in the pristine waters, a wave of peace and serenity enveloped my being. The touch of Maa Ganga, believed to cleanse one’s sins, was truly a blessing. My prayers ascended with the sacred ripples, seeking health, happiness, and prosperity for all,” the Chief Minister added.
The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings globally, has drawn sages, saints, and pilgrims in a timeless celebration of faith and devotion. “Witnessing such an extraordinary congregation reaffirmed my faith in the eternal values that bind humanity,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Accompanying the Chief Minister was a high-level delegation, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Ministers, MLAs, Advisors, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and councillors from GMC, along with esteemed pandits, purohits, monks, dignitaries, and government officials from Sikkim. Three cases of suicide were reported last months in Sikkim, and another three cases were reported last week. According to 2024 data, Sikkim has a high suicide rate of 43.1 per 100,000 population, whereas the national average is 12.4%, which is alarming.
Sikkim, with a population of six-seven lakh, faces significant economic and financial issues, which can be major factors in these incidents, particularly among those aged 17-40 years. Unfortunately, most cases remain unexplored. Why are they doing it? Until now, no detailed study has been conducted.
Upon studying data from 2020 to 2022, there were 266 suicide attempts in Sikkim, with the East district and adjoining areas contributing to a 39.2% suicide rate among States and Union Territories in 2021. The majority of those who committed suicide were between 17-40 years old—a productive age group.
But why does the 17-40 age group take this step? It remains a mystery. Perhaps it indicates a rise in stress, mental disorders, changing lifestyles, financial crises, or even digital scams, such as losing money to fraudsters. In Siliguri, West Bengal, there was a report of a young man who took a loan from an online app. Unable to repay it and facing harassment, he took his own life.
Another factor leading to suicides in Sikkim is multifaceted, including poverty, lack of access to necessities, and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. Economic development and industrialization must not exacerbate despair or suicidal ideation.
People living hand-to-mouth are losing hope in their lives, particularly due to failures in life or lack of financial support. By valuing diversity and promoting equality, we can create a society where everyone feels valued and can contribute to building a future where humanity may once again thrive in Sikkim. However, internally, it is a serious concern.
To combat this crisis, we must address the root causes and provide support to vulnerable communities. But we should also acknowledge that communities do not always extend a helping hand during difficult times, making people lose faith in them. This includes expanding access to mental health services, tackling discrimination and unemployment, and raising awareness about suicide prevention. Poor communities often have limited access to mental health resources, social support, and crisis intervention, making them particularly vulnerable.
Public and private partnerships should be promoted to design social safety nets and work collaboratively for the well-being of these communities. Civil society must champion the richness of Sikkim’s culture and environment rather than constantly focusing on the economic crisis, which creates dreams without a level playing field.

Now, a simple question arises: What are NGOs in Sikkim doing to combat this? When we question them, they say they lack resources to support people. Resources mean collaboration, sourcing solutions, and working at the ground level to understand the root causes. Not everything is about mental health. Not everything is about depression. Not everything is about unemployment. With just a 6-7 lakh population and a lack of study and action by NGOs, we will still question them sooner or later in an open forum. Despite Sikkim’s population decreasing, the state still ranks among the highest in suicide rates.
Another issue is the hanging banners by the roadside with helpline numbers that often don’t work. That isn’t enough. The state needs dedicated experts who can study and address the issue and implement effective solutions. Currently, no substantial study has been undertaken to understand the scope of the problem.
Does putting up banners or Speaking on stage by NGO help prevent suicides? Or does the state need serious attention and expert intervention to address this crisis? Should we continue to ignore it and let it be, or take meaningful action?The richness of Sikkim’s culture and environment must be promoted in open spaces, and the economic well-being of a few should not come at the cost of human lives. It simply isn’t worth it—or is it?

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS) Department of Sikkim, in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has successfully concluded a 16-day intensive training program for 25 Pashusakhis under the Sikkim Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM). The program, held from December 3 to December 18, 2024, at the Sokeythang Training Centre, aimed to revolutionize Sikkim’s livestock sector by creating certified Accredited Agents for Health and Extension of Livestock Production (A-HELPs).
Participants received hands-on training in advanced animal handling, modern housing practices, ration balancing, first aid procedures, and sustainable livestock management. Field visits to prestigious facilities, including Mamring Gaushala, Singhari Goat Conservation Farm, Sikkim Milk Union, and the State Veterinary Polyclinic, further enhanced their practical knowledge.
The valedictory ceremony on December 19, 2024, was graced by Principal Director Dr. Anand Thapa and senior officials from AH & SRLM. Dr. Thapa emphasized the program’s impact in bridging gaps between veterinary services and farming communities, fostering sustainable livestock management practices, and improving animal health outcomes across Sikkim. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Sikkim’s Animal Husbandry development.
