SEBIvsSCAM: SEBI and NSE Join Forces to Protect Investors from Financial Frauds

0

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a nationwide investor awareness campaign titled #SEBIvsSCAM, aimed at educating investors about various types of financial scams and how to safeguard themselves. This initiative is part of SEBI’s ongoing commitment to protect the retail investors from such scams in the securities market. Under SEBI’s guidance and regulatory oversight, the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE) has rolled out a comprehensive investor protection drive to support this campaign.

The campaign comes at a critical time when digital financial frauds are on the rise, with fraudsters using increasingly sophisticated and deceptive methods to target investors. From fake trading apps and deepfake videos to unregistered investment advisors and misleading stock tips on social media, scammers are exploiting technology and denting investor’s trust. Many individuals fall prey to schemes promising guaranteed returns/unusually high returns, pump-and-dump tactics, dabba trading, fraudulent foreign portfolio investment offers, etc—often resulting in significant financial losses.

#SEBIvsSCAM seeks to raise public awareness, promote safe investing habits and empower investors to make informed decisions. By spotlighting common scams and offering guidance, the campaign aims to help investors recognize warning signs, verify sources and report suspicious activities—ultimately contributing to a more secure and transparent financial ecosystem.

To ensure maximum outreach, NSE, under the aegis of SEBI will leverage a mix of media platforms including television, radio, print, digital and social media. We will also spread the Investor Awareness messages through Investor Awareness Programs which are done through physical, digital and hybrid modes. This multi-channel approach is designed to reach investors across urban and rural areas, in multiple languages and through formats that are accessible and engaging to diverse audiences.

The District and Sessions Judge of Special Division-I, Gangtok, Ms. Jyoti Kharka, has convicted Rayshop Rai, a resident of Middle Samdong, for the murder of Rukesh Rai in a case dating back to July 28, 2023.

The court found the accused guilty under Section 302 (murder) and Section 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred after a heated argument broke out between the two men near a kutcha house in a forested area close to Samdong Bazar. Later that night, after his family had gone to sleep, Rayshop Rai took a sharp-edged weapon (bamphok), proceeded to the victim’s residence, called him outside, and launched a brutal attack, killing him on the spot.

The murder came to light the following morning when the matter was reported to the Singtam Police Station. The case was investigated by S.I. Phur Tshering Lepcha.

The State was represented in court by Prosecutor Mr. Yadav Sharma, who presented evidence and witness testimony that led to the conviction.

Pakyong Police Recover 50 Phones, Solve Gold Theft Case

The Pakyong Police Station has successfully recovered 50 lost or stolen mobile phones out of 98 registered complaints, thanks to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The CEIR platform enables law enforcement to trace and block stolen mobile devices using their IMEI numbers. Once a device is blocked, it becomes unusable on any Indian telecom network, significantly reducing its resale value and discouraging mobile theft.

Before CEIR’s implementation, tracing lost phones across telecom circles was a tedious process. Now, with a few digital entries, police can blacklist a phone instantly. In one notable case, a missing phone belonging to a resident of Aho, Pakyong, was tracked to Bihar. The person in possession, realizing it had been flagged, returned it by speed post. The phone was verified and handed back to its rightful owner.

The portal also played a crucial role in solving Pakyong PS FIR No. 12/2025 dated March 9, 2025, under BNS Sections 331(3)/305(a). In this case, stolen gold ornaments were recovered, and the accused were apprehended—another testament to how CEIR is supporting broader investigations beyond phones.

Police have urged the public to note down their IMEI numbers, either from the device box or by dialing *#06#, and to report losses immediately. Citizens can directly block their stolen phone on the CEIR portal by uploading their complaint copy and ID proof.

15-Inch Banana from Wokha, Nagaland May Set New Guinness World Record

" 15-Inch Banana from Wokha, Nagaland"

A potentially world record-breaking 15-inch (38.1 cm) banana has been harvested in Mungyanphen Baghty Valley of Wokha district, Nagaland, drawing national attention to the region’s fertile agricultural lands.

The giant banana was grown by N. Tsanthungo Ngullie, a local farmer who only discovered its extraordinary size after harvesting it on July 8. The banana’s length clearly exceeds the current Guinness World Record of 12 inches, and local authorities have now stepped in to document and verify the fruit for official submission.

According to reports from NLTV Nagaland and other local media outlets, the banana was found among a routine harvest in an area already known for its banana cultivation. However, this specific specimen’s size took everyone by surprise—including the grower himself.

“I didn’t realize it was unusual until after I cut it,” said Tsanthungo in a local interview. “Only when we measured it did we understand it could be something special.”

Officials are currently in the process of recording formal measurements, photographic documentation, and preservation of the fruit as per Guinness World Records protocol. Once submitted, the banana could officially dethrone the current world record-holder.

Nagaland’s Mungyanphen Baghty Valley has long been a key banana-growing region in Nagaland. Under the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative, Wokha has received special focus for banana development. The valley’s climate and fertile soil have consistently produced robust harvests, but this 15-inch fruit may be the most iconic yet.
