Man Arrested for Murdering Wife in Sikkim’s Soreng District

The police have arrested a man on charges of murdering his wife, creating a sensation in the quiet town of Baiguney. The body of a 47-year-old woman, Mira Rai, was discovered in a forest above Baiguney BAC, under the jurisdiction of Nayabazar Police Station, West Sikkim.

The accused, Hemchandra Rai, 45, originally from Negi Basti, Darjeeling, and currently residing in Baiguney, allegedly killed his wife by smashing her face with a stone. The crime occurred near Pipley in the Baiguney area of Soreng District. After the murder, Hemchandra fled the scene, prompting a search by local police.

The incident came to light after a FIR was lodged by Mr. Karna Bahadur Rai, a resident of Baiguney, reporting the suspected murder. Upon receiving the report, the police launched a manhunt and successfully arrested the absconding Hemchandra this afternoon.

Soreng District Superintendent of Police, Nakul Pradhan, confirmed the arrest, stating that Hemchandra Rai was taken into custody following an extensive search operation by officers from Nayabazar Police Station. A case has been registered against him under Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused is currently being held at Nayabazar Police Station and will be presented before the court on Friday to seek remand for further investigation. The case remains under active investigation.
