A state-of-the-art milk collection center was inaugurated today in Gangtok, marking a major boost for local dairy farmers under the National Program on Dairy Development (NPDD). The center was inaugurated by Mr. Yam Kumar Sharma, Chairman of the Sikkim Milk Union, along with Managing Director Dr. Tilak Ghatani, Board Member Mr. C.P. Sharma, and other dignitaries.
The center features a 300-litre Bulk Milk Cooler (BMC) and a DG set, both installed at a combined cost of ₹6 lakh, aimed at ensuring milk quality and reducing spoilage.
Serving over 30 farmers from the Taja Dudh Utpadak Sahakari Samiti, the facility now collects more than 200 litres of milk daily and is equipped with essential technical support.
Post-inauguration, an inclusive awareness program was held with farmers in attendance. Dr. Tilak Ghatani stressed the importance of proper cattle feed and hygiene in producing high-quality milk. He encouraged youth participation in dairy farming and announced an upcoming increase in milk procurement prices to support farmers.
Chairman Mr. Sharma spoke on ongoing and future government schemes for dairy development, while BOD member Mr. C.P. Sharma emphasized maintaining hygiene at collection centers.
This new facility is expected to strengthen Sikkim’s dairy value chain and empower the rural farming community.
