The Sikkim’s Dying Rorathang

0
The Dying Rorathang

Every time, some private Company Digs Sand & Stone in the Rorathang riverside illegally, and Sikkim Govt & Department is Unmoved? Authority action is just an eyewash- an ultimate Drama.

In 2019 The Sikkim Today has published and report that in Jalipool cremation the businessman instead of building that place has used the excavators for quarrying purposes. A full-fledged quarry is operational from this place at the moment, as seen by a passer-by. The final resting place for those following the Hindu rituals has been reduced to a quarrying field by a Contractor, who has sold the tender work to another Businessman for 1 crore.

It is not the first time that this negligent company is creating trouble for the environment and a life threat for civilians in East Sikkim’s Riverbank small village called Rorathang. Each time this company gets easy bail by some nexus between authority and their settings. It’s still happening and local complaints about this are helpless.

Last Months, again some company was caught red-handed smuggling materials from another side of the river (West Bengal side) inside Sikkim crossing river with JCB hampering river course, the Earthmover JCB machine was haphazardly clearing the riverway which according to Forest rule is a highly punishable offense as well as from Police side also for masquerading official Checkpost for ferrying freights and goods.

Also, the place is a highly sinking zone on the riverbank side beside there are some permacultural company was established in riverside. The company has diverted the course of the river towards the basement of the big slide as such in the coming time there could be a big mishap. Adding to this unprecedented manned threats also looms for industrial Units like SDL and Pharma Companies which are established just above the sinking zone.

Forgot about pharma company, the main border highway for Army vehicular movements towards Changu, Nathula is under construction and it could also be badly affected along with civilian traffic (Rorathang, Pakyong, Rongli, and Rhenock) due to detonation works beneath vulnerable sinking zone where this many company constructions is being carried in a rampant way!

In 2019 we published the same news in TST – but this is just an eyewash says, locals youth of Rorathang. Authority just pretends to have acted but in a real sense, everything is set up and drama only.

Actually, I have never skied in my life. I recently went on my first ski trip. Of course, it was in Lachung – in 2019 December to be more precise as we own Hillrooms in Lachung. What should I say? The scenery was amazing, everything was organized perfectly and professionally by local itself. North Sikkim in winter was just stunning!

So, spending time in winter is perfect for any traveler who desired to see snow in their life on top of the mountain as well.

So, this post should help you find out about things to do in North Sikkim In Winter, but you will also find many travel tips for your Sikkim winter trip.

Lachung: is a great place to stay for snow lovers in winter place will all be covered by snow – it is one of the best winter destinations, and you can reach places like Yumthang Valley easily is known as a valley of flowers. The HillRoom hotel is supposed to be amazing in North Sikkim, so if you are looking for a fancy place, this is probably the best pick.

Gurudongmar: Gurudongmar is an amazing place to travel to in Sikkim in the winter. It is located a bit far in North Sikkim where you’ll find a holy lake with pure blue water and getting there is not as easy since it’s high altitude area with low oxygen support.

Zuluk: During winters, Zuluk gets draped in fluffy white snow blankets and the scenery becomes even more beautiful. Though the rainfall makes the terrain tricky and slopes hard to explore, the entire scenery surpasses the limits of beauty. So, all in all, sightseeing in Zuluk can be enjoyed at any time of the year depending on your travel interests. We recommend visiting the place during summers and early winters if you have kids and elderly people in your traveling group. The weather can get changed after a few rain showers.

Kala Patthar – It’s all black and white – black mountains and white snow. The place is very extremely cold but it will make your trip memorable.

To reach here you have to start from Lachen to reach this place in time. But you have to give an additional charge to the driver for this trip. When you reach Thangu from Lachen, it will take 1 hour from Thangu to reach Kala Patthar.

Katao – It’s known as Mini Switzerland of India, It’s Military Base in North Sikkim but clapped with snow all over, you will feel like you are in Switzerland. The view that you see in Katao is something that you should try to capture as much as possible through your eyes or else your camera.

Lachen– Heard about Lachen’s Apple, one of the best in India, this is where it comes from. It’s is one of the best villages in North Sikkim which has an attractive tourist spot Lachung monastery which held a grand festival. Lachen is a less-populated beautiful holiday destination with snow-capped mountains which is known as the gateway to the most amazing Gurudongmar and Tso Lhamu lakes.

Yumthang Valley – Known as a valley of flowers located in North Sikkim which takes two hours drive from Lachung. The Place is a very mesmerizing valley with beautiful views and absolute serenity. You will find lots of seasonal blossoms flowers like Primulas all around the valleys and also the different species of Rhododendrons and Magnolias all around the valley.

Nightlife in North Sikkim: It’s is a great place to Bonfire, chill, drink, listen to some good music and refreshment & cold air, and have good food at reasonable prices.

The PLA Conundrum: Depiction of Cross-Border Conjugality? An analsyis from the geopolitical & security perspective

The nation is in a state of grief and anguish following the recent ambush in Manipur’s Churachandpur district which led to the death of 7 people, 4  security personnel, and their   Commanding Officer including his family, belonging to  ‘The Assam Rifles ‘.  The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Manipur Naga People’s Front have jointly claimed responsibility for the ambush of the Assam Rifles convoy. The name PLA clearly coincides with the official name of the armed forces of neigbouring ‘ People’s Republic of China ‘ (China). So it clearly depicts the core objective of this Manipur-based banned insurgent outfit, that is to establish an independent state of Manipur through its ideological orientations towards  ‘Maoism’. There is a long history of Chinese involvement in providing arms and assistance to the insurgent outfits based in North East India. From the current perspective, this has mainly to do with the probable motive by the external adversary for countering the positive image and narrative of the region that has been at the forefront since the coming of the current dispensation in New Delhi in 2014 and its subsequent return in 2019 through the grand developmental projects in areas such as infrastructure, connectivity and national integration projections following multiple peace agreements with various insurgent outfits.

In 2017, a news report cited a statement by the Chinese state media which said ‘ rising Hindu Nationalism’ has hijacked India’s China policy. So a dot can be connected here, considering the ideological leanings of the current dispensation in the center as well as in the state of Manipur. According to a report by a European Think Tank,’ The European Foundation for South Asian Studies ( EFSAS), China’s weapon supply to terrorists in Myanmar re-ignites India’s fear of another insurgency in the North East. The district where the ambush took place, have an international boundary with neighboring Myanmar. So it’s pretty clear that the porous border has been an upper hand for the insurgents in carrying out the ambush. Another picture that has been floating over the social media is one of the old tweets by the editor in chief of the Chinese Communist Party’s international mouthpiece ‘ The Global Times’ , Hu Xijin following the fatal ambush which has speculated a possible Chinese hand behind it.

Tweet by Chinese Journalist

Well, from the geopolitical and security perspective, considering the ongoing loggerheads between New Delhi and Beijing following the Galwan valley clash last year in Ladakh, it can be speculated that the Chinese state wants to accomplish its diabolical objectives through unconventional means by supporting the remnants of the separatist insurgents thereby acting as an obstacle for the ongoing ‘ wagon of development’  in the region.  Another major factor that cannot be ignored with regard to the insurgency issue is the ‘ drug factor’  which further acts as the smooth facilitator in the funding of the insurgent outfits. Here, the infamous ‘Golden Triangle‘ plays a crucial role. It can be further said that the recent order by the Centre to the Manipur state govt to act with urgency on drug menace which may have been a reason for the insurgents to counter it by carrying out the attack on the Assam Rifles Convoy in Manipur, considering the close nexus of the cross border drug trafficking with the insurgent outfits.

The Assam Rifles is also the primary force responsible for guarding the Indo-Myanmar border which actually puts them in an overloading situation while dealing with multiple tasks from guarding the border to carrying out counter-insurgency operations and of course preventing the menace of cross- border drugs trafficking. Therefore, the inception of a joint security apparatus involving multiple actors, the AR, local administration, and state police based on mutual and assertive cooperation can actually be a strong and effective force in dealing with these issues which will eventually create a clear cut division of work based on the certain attributes required to deal with the multifaceted issue of insurgency in the region. India’s North-Eastern region is the primary crossroad connecting  South East Asia where the ‘Act East Policy’ has eventually led to synchronising the overall development of the region. So a stable and peaceful  North Eastern India is a path towards completion of India’s aspirations for engaging with the South East Asian region.

"AUKUS SECURITY ALLIANCE"

The US administration established a new trilateral security alliance for the Indo-Pacific involving Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States a week before the Quad leaders’ conference in Washington, DC (AUKUS). Within 18 months, Australia will acquire nuclear-powered submarines with the support of the United Kingdom and the United States.

China not mentioned explicitly in any of the AUKUS statements. Regardless, the formation of the organization is crucial because the Indo-Pacific is quickly emerging as a hotspot of geopolitical competition, with China claiming sovereignty over the whole South China Sea. Let’s take a look at the new AUKUS group, its relevance, and its issues in this post.

KEY FEATURES

Australia will acquire nuclear-powered submarines: The first major project of AUKUS would be the delivery to Australia of a nuclear-powered submarine fleet within the following 18 months.

The UK and the US will assist Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines as part of the AUKUS alliance. The submarines will be manufactured in Adelaide, Australia, and be nuclear-powered. This is critical since the United States and Russia share nuclear submarine technology. Only once in the previous 70 years has this occurred, when it shared technology with the United Kingdom in 1958.

The submarines will not have nuclear weapons. Instead, these are nuclear-powered submarines that are conventionally armed.

Nuclear submarines are only in the hands of a few governments. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and India are among them. Australia will join these elite countries as a result of the AUKUS cooperation. Furthermore, Australia will be the only country in the world with such submarines and no civilian nuclear power industry.

  1. Focus on Indo-Pacific :

The AUKUS security alliance will work to advance strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.

2. Other multi-sectorial cooperation :

A new architecture of meetings and exchanges between the three countries will be part of the AUKUS collaboration. They also collaborate on new technologies like applied AI, quantum technologies, and subsea capabilities, among others.

In addition, the collaboration will collaborate with other regional partners such as the Quad and ASEAN.

SIGNIFICANCE OF AUKUS:

  1. Compliment the efforts of QUAD in Indo-Pacific:

“If the new collaboration lives up to its promise, it may be a “game-changer” for the region,” says Arzan Tarapore, a South Asia security expert. “Along with India’s stated aim to buy new nuclear-powered submarines, the AUKUS will amount to a step-change boost in the Quad’s undersea and anti-submarine warfare capabilities,” he continues.

Because the Quad is not a security grouping, the AUKUS adds security to the mix. For the time being, the Quad and AUKUS will run on separate tracks, with the prospect of them merging in the future.

2. Countering China in the Indo-Pacific, especially in the South China Sea:

In the Pacific, where China has become most aggressive, the nuclear-powered submarines will provide Australia with naval strength. The Royal Australian Navy now has the potential to go into the South China Sea to secure its assets and conduct patrols thanks to nuclear-powered submarines.

3. Compliment other regional groupings in Indo-Pacific:

Apart from complementing the QUAD, the AUKUS will also benefit other Indo-Pacific military alliances. The ANZUS and Five Eyes alliances are among them.

CHINA’S CONCERNS:

Because of the following reasons, China is more alarmed by AUKUS than by Quad and other Indo-Pacific alliances:

To begin with, AUKUS is designed to safeguard the strategic interests of its partners in a region that encompasses two oceans and 38 countries.

Second, it sends a message to China that the US may do the same for other countries in the region in the future. Military and essential capabilities such as cyber, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing are being shared. It is a source of concern for China, as these are the primary areas in which it now dominates.

Third, unlike QUAD, which is a diplomatic grouping, the AUKUS is a security organization. The Quad hasn’t established a charter or invested itself with any real power. China denounced the Quad as a “headline-grabbing proposal that will vanish like sea-foam.” Similarly, the Malabar exercise is not a naval alliance. Even though the practice of cooperation designed to aid communication and interoperability in times of crisis.

Fourth, the announcement brings Australia-China ties to a new low. China is Australia’s largest trading partner, with approximately $200 billion in bilateral commerce. However, the connection has deteriorated in recent years.

China has described the new AUKUS collaboration as “severely harming regional peace and stability” for these reasons alone.

WHAT THE AUKUS ALLIANCE MEANT FOR INDIA?

The cooperation, according to Indian observers, is extremely beneficial to India. In the Indo-Pacific, India has been at the vanguard of rallying a bigger coalition of countries. Among the advantages are:

  1. Upgrade India’s allies in the region

Without the requisite capability increase for all of its members, particularly Australia and Japan, QUAD is worthless. This will increase India’s partners’ self-assurance and assurance in their defense capabilities.

The AUKUS, as well as a prospective US military installation on Australian land, will aid India’s efforts to defend the Indo-Pacific.

2. Provide necessary time to India to build naval capabilities:

Furthermore, the AUKUS will allow India some crucial time to improve its naval capabilities.

3. Improve India’s ambition in International relations:

India would be able to be more ambitious in its foreign policy and defense strategy as a result of the alliance.

CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH AUKUS

  1. Promote Nuclear arms race:

The new AUKUS organization, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, will exacerbate the arms race and harm international non-proliferation efforts. Other South Asian countries, such as North Korea, Indonesia, and Malaysia, share this viewpoint.

2. Create a Cold-war like a scenario:

These new alliances, according to strategic experts, are analogous to the Cold War era, when the entire world was divided into groups. As relations between the United States and China have deteriorated in recent years, states in the Indo-Pacific have found it more difficult to maneuver between the two superpowers.

Countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, for example, may find it “less tenable” to have security links with the US while also managing relations with China, according to a former Australian diplomat.

3. Unpredictable behavior of America in foreign ties

The United States did not even inform or contact any other regional partners; for example, France, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan not invited to join this collaboration. The United States recently stated that neither India nor Japan would be admitted to the AUKUS alliance.

The French government described the US move as a “brutal, unilateral, and unpredictable decision,” adding that “allies don’t do this to each other.” Canada, on the other hand, intends the AUKUS to be a CAUKUS with Canada as a member.

As a result, C. Raja Mohan believes that AUKUS will leave a lasting mark on US-EU ties and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as well as undermine the multinational Indo-Pacific coalition.

4. Questions the credibility of the US and its allies to counter China:

“The US military, with all its power, could not beat a group of Taliban rebels,” said a former Australian Prime Minister. Furthermore, he believes that this alliance will not pose a threat to China, since “China is not only the world’s largest state, but also the occupant and commander of Asia’s largest landmass.” China also has the world’s largest military modernization programme.

5. Trouble the relations with France:

Australia had to abandon a $65 billion deal with France in 2016 to build 12 of the world’s largest conventional submarines in exchange for joining the AUKUS collaboration. Now, France is demanding explanations from all parties and has withdrawn its envoys from Australia and the United States, calling the initiative a “stab in the back.” Furthermore, it appears that a protracted court struggle over the contract is unavoidable.

Due to France’s rising influence in the Indo-Pacific area, any future cooperation with France in the region will be impacted. For the time being, it also has an impact on the India-Australia-France trilateral. A scheduled meeting of the foreign ministers of Australia, France, and India at the United Nations was recently cancelled by France.

6. Against the 1984 nuclear-free zone policy of Australia and New Zealand:

The partnership’s announcement sparked a brief spat with New Zealand. Nuclear-powered submarines from Australia would be prohibited from entering New Zealand territorial seas under the nuclear-free zone legislation.

CONCLUSION

With AUKUS in place, India has a little less to worry about on the maritime front. The new alliance would allow the three countries to concentrate their efforts on a more difficult portion of the globe. The AUKUS trilateral will send a strong message to China, and it will bring the Indo-Pacific region closer to balancing China.
