Sikkim Manipal Hospital

Gangtok, January 15 (IPR) Central Referral Hospital, Manipal becomes the first hospital in the state to receive certification from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH). The hospital organized a press conference today at the VC Conference Hall, Manipal to announce the recognition.

According to the Vice Chancellor (SMU) Dr. Veteran General Mr. Rajan S. Grewal, the process of accreditation began to take shape almost three years ago. The process, he shared, was met with derision from his counterparts in other hospitals as well as members of his own hospital staff when it was initially mooted. He further added that NABH standard is a guideline on how to operate in a systematic manner, because the skills acquired in medical schools need certain guidelines. The VC also acknowledged the praiseworthy contribution of the all Women team at Central Referral Hospital, led by Dr. Mingma L Sherpa, Team of Managing operators, Operations executive to achieve the quality certification.

Head of Operations, CRH, Dr. Mingma Sherpa highlighted that the prime aim of CRH is to give quality and safe treatment to their patients and with this momentous achievement, CRH would set a trend of quality medical care in the state.

The process began on January 15th 2020, when the CRH completed and submitted comprehensive list of documents and evidence in the NABH online Hope Portal, Quality Council India. The onsite virtual assessment was successfully completed on 7th May 2021.

It is to be noted that NABH is a constituent of the Quality Council of India, which was set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for health care organisations. Third part accreditation and certifications by reputed organisation like NABH, enables healthcare organisations to standardise practices to improve the confidence of stakeholders and partners.

Previously, on September 16, 2019 a three-day training programme on (NABH) was organised for the first time in the state, which was attended by stakeholders from all departments including clinicians, faculty, paramedics, administration, engineering, HR, IT and support staff.

Sikkim: Healthcare facilities in Sikkim are yet under crisis, as Sikkim planned to have the best healthcare system for the poor but the ground realities are far from what is being said in media being shown to the outside world.

The recent case of a 36-year-old pregnant woman succumbing due to neglect by an STNM hospital doctor should be eyes opener to all. A Pregnant lady from Khamdong had visited STNM Hospital yesterday afternoon as she was pregnant.

According to available details, she is a resident of the Khamdong area which is in the east district, came to the Hospital on Friday in the afternoon for a checkup. During ultrasound, the baby inside her womb was detected with no heartbeat. She was later admitted in the hospital and told to prepare for an operation.

The doctor on duty told her to prepare for the operation and asked her to wait till the furthur. However, soon after, the doctor left after completing his routine duty, and he didn’t turn up to conduct the operation and the patient suffered the whole night and eventually passed away at 7 AM today morning.

Her husband said when her condition deteriorated around evening on Thursday, he tired of reaching everywhere and pledged to save her wife who is in serious condition.

This hospital is only for the rich, we poor let alone suffer,” He told to The Sikkim Today.

Meanwhile, health officials and health minister is yet to give their statement as this is a serious case in Sikkim which is not for the first time in 2020 a 26-year-old died due to unavailability of ICU bed in the same hospital.

Till now management has not learned anything where 26 years old’s news was eyes open to all in 2021, at the same time the health department should pull up their shock since this happened in a multispeciality hospital.

This pregnant women’s death once again painted a grim picture of the healthcare scenario of Sikkim.

"Cases in Sikkim Rising "

A startling 322 cases of covid cases in Sikkim were reported on Wednesday, but even that figure is likely an undercount of the real number as the cases are rising day by day taking an active case to 1063 on Thursday which reported 294 cases.

On Wednesday there were 322 cases of the virus in the Sikkim, according to a Sikkim Health database. However, even that figure is likely a serious undercount of the true numbers of positive cases, due to the rising popularity of home tests and people who are infected but asymptomatic.

The seven-day rolling average of cases in Sikkim is also soaring to a new high of more than 1000 per day on average, a surge driven largely by the highly contagious Omicron variant which hasn’t been reported in Sikkim yet.

“It’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of Covid,” Ajay Agarwal, Senior Journalist at Sikkim told TsT while checking the database.

Record case counts are being logged in states and districts across the Sikkim, including East Sikkim which reported double a hundred cases in last two days. In Gangtok, a large number of volunteers are helping Medical staff in hospitals, and South and west medical personnel have deployed to bolster the local health services.

Indian health experts urged everyone to prepare for severe disruptions in coming weeks as the surge threatened hospitals, schools, and other sectors impacting their daily lives.

“The month is going to be more serious,” one expert said. “Since every December-January months of the year seasonal flu happens and all of citizens is going to be pressured by due to this.”

On Thursday, confirmed infections climbed to an average of about 294 new cases today with a 17.8% positivity rate, compared to yesterday’s 322, January 12th, according to Sikkim Hospital reports. And East districts reported 200, and 45 in West and 40 in the south and 09 in the north each with 885 test done — reported that case numbers have gone up over the past two weeks in Sikkim.

At the same time, parts of the state are running up against deep vaccine resistance for children below 19, while the highly contagious mutant version of the coronavirus that was first detected only is accounting for an ever-larger share of infections in Gangtok and Namchi together.

AIC-SMUTBI selected by Startup India

AIC-SMU Technoloogy Business Incubation Foundation (AIC-SMUTBI) which is an Incubator supported by AIM, NITI Aayog, Government of India has been selected by Startup India, Department of Promotion of Industries and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India to provide financial assistance to startups for proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry, and commercialization of Product.

AIC-SMUTBI is the first incubator from North East India to be part of the portfolio of Startup India Seedfund as on date.

Currently, there are 769 startups registered with Startup India Portal out of which only 31 incubator has so far been listed in the portfolio of Startup India SeedFund Scheme. AIC-SMUTBI is one of the latest additions to their portfolio.

AIC-SMUTBI supports startup at their early stage of the venture and is sector agnostic. It currently has 73 startups from all the states of North East India and also other parts of the country working in domains like Defence, Aerospace, Agriculture, EdTech, e-Mobilty, FinTech, FMCG, HealthCare, IOT/ML/AL, Tourism etc.

As per CEO of AIC-SMUTBI, Dr Tej Chingtham, Seed funding is the first official equity funding stage. It typically represents the first official money that a startup raises. Funding from Angel investors and Venture Capital firms becomes available to startups only after the proof of concept has been provided. Similarly, banks generally provide loans only to asset-backed applicants. It is essential to provide seed funding to startups with an innovative idea to conduct proof of concept trials. Many innovative business ideas fail to take off due to the absence of this critical capital required at an early stage for proof of concept, prototype development, product trials, market entry and commercialization. AIC-SMUTBI Seed Fund offered to such promising cases can have a multiplier effect in validation of business ideas of many startups, leading to employment generation.

The funds can be raised by startups most likely in the instruments of Convertible Notes, Debt or equity with opportunities for follow on investments from the partner Venture Fund and Investors.

This Seed Fund of AIC-SMUTBI  will be available to startups recognized by DPIIT, incorporated not more than 2 years at the time of application and should not have received more than Rs 10 lakh of monetary support under any other Central or State Government scheme. This does not include prize money from competitions and grand challenges, subsidized working space, founder monthly allowance, access to labs, or access to prototyping facility.
