Power Department Worker Dies After Electric Shock in Upper Rumbuk.

A tragic incident occurred in Upper Rumbuk, Soreng District, where a 32-year-old man, Purandra Subba, lost his life after reportedly falling due to an electric shock while on duty at the Power Department substation. The incident took place on the evening of February 22, 2025, around 6:40 PM.

The deceased, a resident of Upper Rumbuk, was brought to the Sombaria Primary Health Centre (PHC) at approximately 8:30 PM, where Medical Officer on duty, confirmed the death. The PHC staff alerted authorities, and a case was registered under Section 194 of the BNSS, 2023 (Fatal Accident) with FIR No. 04/2025.

Inquest proceedings were conducted by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Soreng and the body was sent for postmortem at the District Hospital in Gyalshing for further examination. Initial investigations suggest that there was no foul play involved in the incident.

The authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall to ensure that all details are thoroughly examined.

13-Year-Old Girl Found Hanging in Mamring, Namthang Rateypani Constituency in Namchi District.

A 13-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling beam of her room in Mamring, on February 22 at around 3:00 PM. The tragic incident was reported to the police by the local Ward Panchayat.

According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was a student at Mamring Junior High School and the only child of her parents. She had reportedly been expressing a desire to transfer to a different school in Namthang, but due to logistical constraints, her parents decided to keep her enrolled at the same institution.

On the day of the incident, she was alone at home as it was a school holiday. Her father, a casual laborer, and her mother, an employee at a private company, were away at work, while her grandfather had gone to the fields. Upon returning home in the afternoon, her mother found her hanging and immediately raised an alarm.

Authorities conducted an inquest in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and family members. The body was transported to District Hospital Singtam for a medico-legal autopsy and the case is under investigation.

The 14th Annual General Meeting of the Sikkim State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (SIMFED), an apex marketing cooperative society of the state of Sikkim, was held on the 21st of February, 2025, at a local hotel in the capital.

The Annual General Meeting, held after a hiatus of many years, was chaired by Chairman of SIMFED, Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia.

The meeting was attended by the Board of Directors of SIMFED, K.P. Sharma, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Mahendra Pradhan, Director, Finance Department, Sameer Gurung, Additional Director, Horticulture Department, Dhiraj Pradhan, Managing Director, Denzong Agriculture Cooperative Society, Rinchen Kaleon, Deputy General Manager, SISCO Bank, Bhaskar Basnett, Managing Director, SIMFED, members of the primary agricultural cooperative societies, officials from the Department of Cooperation, and officers and staff of SIMFED.

The Chairman of SIMFED addressed the gathering and expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for placing his trust in him and appointing him as the Chairman of SIMFED. The Chairman assured the members present that he is committed to serving the organization and its members to the best of his abilities. He stressed the need for SIMFED and its members to work together for the future of the state. The Chairman also emphasized that SIMFED would follow the mantra of “Vocal for Local” and help growers market their produce in distant niche markets.

The Managing Director presented the Annual Report for the Financial Year 2015-16 to 2023-24 to the gathering. In his report, he informed that, against the authorized share capital of Rs. 5.00 crore, the total paid-up share capital of SIMFED was Rs. 3.56 crore as of 31.03.2024. The shareholders of SIMFED included the Government of Sikkim and various cooperative societies across the state. He also informed that the net profit of the federation for the year ending 31st March 2024 was Rs. 88.84 lakhs.

Dividends for the last cumulative years were declared as follows:

  • Government of Sikkim: Rs. 1,30,00,000.00
  • Member Cooperative Societies: Rs. 15,30,000.00
  • TOTAL: Rs. 1,45,30,000.00

The Managing Director assured that, depending on the progress of the federation, the rate of dividend would increase in the coming years to benefit the member shareholders of SIMFED. It was also informed that this was the 20th consecutive year that the dividend was being declared by SIMFED.

The Managing Director stated that SIMFED had prioritized the marketing of agricultural, horticultural, and floricultural surplus produce of the state. It was noted that SIMFED, under the Production Incentive Scheme announced by the Chief Minister, Government of Sikkim, had marketed various produces like ginger, oranges, cardamom, and pulses.

An interactive session was held between the member societies and the management of SIMFED. The management acknowledged all valuable suggestions made by the member societies and assured they would be incorporated into future planning and functioning of SIMFED.

Elections for the Board of Directors from the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies were also held. The current directors, represented by members from the Primary Cooperative Societies in the Board of SIMFED, were dissolved as they had completed their tenure. An election was held for the post of 9 Directors from the Primary Cooperative Societies for the Board of SIMFED. The newly elected Directors (representatives from the Primary Cooperative Societies) are as follows:

  2. Sudip Pradhan, Central Pandam MPCS.
  3. Saradhan Rai, North Regu MPCS Ltd.

The Chairman thanked and felicitated the outgoing Board of Directors and welcomed the newly elected Board of Directors.

The State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) has seized three properties following significant loan defaults. Kiran Chettri’s property near Tadong outpost in Gangtok was taken over after Sushila Chamling, daughter of former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, defaulted on a ₹2.3 crore loan.

Hotel Lhasa in Gangtok was also seized by the bank after the owners failed to repay a ₹6 crore loan taken in 2017, despite multiple recovery attempts. Additionally, SBS attached land and a building owned by Palden Bhutia in Sangtong Block, Ranka, under Gangtok District, due to a ₹2 crore loan default. These actions were carried out as part of SBS’s legal recovery process.

In a successful joint operation, Sikkim Police, led by SDPO Tashi Chopel Bhutia, captured Samson Tamang in Bodhgaya, Bihar, on Wednesday night. This arrest followed a 13-day search operation launched after a complaint accused Tamang of making hate-filled remarks targeting the Khas Community.

The operation, which involved a dedicated team including PI DP Limboo, PI Naresh Chhetri, SI Taman R. Gurung, and other personnel, spanned several key locations in North Bengal and beyond. The investigation utilized technical surveillance and intelligence inputs to track the suspect. Areas such as Siliguri, Naxalbari, Terai, Pani Tanki, and Salugara were extensively searched, and additional efforts extended to Nepal border regions, Kurseong, and Darjeeling.

The breakthrough came when technical leads pointed to Bodhgaya as a potential hiding spot. The Sikkim Police, working closely with Bihar Police in Gaya District, successfully apprehended Tamang. The accused is now in police custody as legal proceedings continue.

EIECOS+1 Pushes for ST Status, Holds Press Conference in Gangtok

A crucial press conference was held in Gangtok today by EIECOS+1 to discuss the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status demand for Sikkim’s 12 left-out communities. The event followed the February 10 meeting at Old Sikkim House, New Delhi, chaired by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

Dr. S.K. Rai, Chairman of EIECOS+1, stated that the meeting included ministers, MPs, MLAs, the Deputy Speaker, and members of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee (SSHLC). The focus was on addressing objections raised by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Registrar General of India (RGI) to strengthen the case for ST status.

Ethnographic reports were a key aspect of the discussion, with presentations by Prof. B.V. Sharma (Kirat Khambu Rai and Yakha Dewan), Prof. M.P. Lama (Gurung), and Prof. Nupur Tiwari (Newar). Sarika Pradhan, Member Secretary of EIECOS+1, outlined the roadmap for final report submission, including field surveys from March 1-6 and a final SSHLC meeting from March 25-27, with the report due by March 31.

Dr. Rai emphasized the importance of a meticulous review process to ensure the authenticity of the reports. The press conference concluded with a strong call for timely action to secure tribal recognition for the 12 communities.
