The Sikkim State Rifle Association has been officially formed to promote shooting sports in the state under the vision and guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay. Sanjay Budhathoki was appointed as President, with Nayan Baraily as Vice President, Sonam Tshering Lepcha as General Secretary, Aaron Gurung as Treasurer, Izlu Gurung as Publicity Secretary, Deepan Shanker as Joint Secretary, and Passang Gurung as Assistant Treasurer. The event was graced by Dr. Hari Mohan Sharma, Research Officer at the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Pakyong Airport is gearing up to expand its operations with incoming flights from major airlines, including Buddha Air, Blade Air, Jetwing, Indigo, and SpiceJet, connecting Sikkim to various parts of India, according to AAI Director Sanjeev Kumar Singh. Buddha Air, a leading private airline from Nepal, is planning to launch flights from Kathmandu to Pakyong, as mentioned on June 13, pending approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Buddha Air will operate two daily flights: a direct Kathmandu-Pakyong route and another with a stopover in Guwahati. The direct flight is expected to take about one hour, while the Pakyong-Guwahati segment will be around 35 minutes.

This new route is expected to significantly boost tourism, improving accessibility between Nepal and Sikkim. Passengers can also enjoy breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, particularly as winter brings clearer skies, making the experience even more remarkable.

The event began with a warm welcome to all the guests, followed by a traditional Khada offering, symbolizing respect and goodwill. The lighting of the lamp (Dwip Prajwalan) and recitation of Swasti Bachan set a spiritual tone for the occasion. One of the highlights was the formal handing over of a 5.5 KVA inverter and batteries to the local Mandir, provided under the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavana. This significant contribution aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply, crucial for the religious site’s operations, especially during power outages.

Lt Col Jagan Paudyel , the Commanding Officer of the Indian Army, was present to oversee the proceedings. His presence underscored the Army’s commitment to building stronger community relations through practical support. In his address, Lt Col Jagan Paudyel emphasized the importance of collaboration between the military and civilian communities, highlighting the Army’s role in supporting local development initiatives.

The President of the Mandir Committee, Shri Govinda Neopaney, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army for their generous contribution. He noted that the provision of the inverter and batteries would greatly benefit the temple and the surrounding community by ensuring continuous power for essential religious activities.

The program included various cultural performances, including a Desh Bhakti song, classical and Nepali dances, and recitations of Kavita and Geeta Path, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. These performances were well-received by the audience, reflecting the unity and diversity of the community.

In a special address, Shri D.R. Nepal highlighted the significance of such initiatives in fostering communal harmony and praised the Indian Army’s efforts in Operation Sadbhavana. His sentiments were backed by the Block Development Officer (BDO), Shri Pushkar Khatiwara, who also addressed the gathering. Shri Khatiwara lauded the Army’s ongoing support and acknowledged the positive impact these contributions have on the local infrastructure and the overall well-being of the community.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by lunch, providing an opportunity for the community and the Indian Army personnel to interact and further strengthen their bonds.

Operation Sadbhavana, meaning “Goodwill,” has been an ongoing initiative by the Indian Army aimed at contributing to the socio-economic development of remote and border areas, fostering goodwill, and building trust among the local populace. Sikkim Extends Construction Ban Due to Unpredictable Weather

The Government of Sikkim’s Urban Development Department has announced an extension of the ban on excavation for construction works in all notified areas of the state. This decision, detailed in Notice No. 784/UDD/Secy dated August 29, 2024, is in continuation of the previous Notice No. 737/UDD/Secy issued on March 26, 2024. The extension is necessitated by unpredictable climatic conditions and variant rainfall patterns currently affecting the region.

Initially, the ban was set to last from May 1, 2024, to August 31, 2024. However, the latest directive extends the restriction until September 15, 2024. The ban is enforced under the Sikkim Allotment of House Sites and Construction of Building (Regulation and Control) Act, 1985, to ensure safety and mitigate potential risks posed by the adverse weather.

All terms and conditions outlined in the original notice will remain in effect until the new deadline. Citizens and construction entities are urged to comply with this extended ban to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
