Woman found dead in Gangtok hotel

A woman was found dead in a hotel at the Panihouse, Gangtok hotel, here on Thursday evening. They had checked into the hotel on 27 December and had booked a room till 30 Dec.

The police said that they had come from Bihar as a tourist, and the man she stayed with her was found missing after the hotel staff checked there, who has been staying there since 27 December.

According to Report, a man named Gyanashwar Kumar was recorded in Aadhar card as he showed in a hotel, But in Rekha Singh’s Aadhar is showing her Husband’s name is Aashish Kumar Singh whose address is recorded as Harpur Jan Saran Bihar.

The body of the deceased, identified as Rekha Singh from Chapra District of Bihar. Gyanashwar Kumar (31) who has been staying in Gangtok hotel with her was found Missing.

The police said that they rushed to the hotel after its management said a door was not opening in one of the rooms. The management also told the police that Gyanashwar Kumar and Rekha checked in at the hotel on Dec 27. On Thursday, a worker went to the room and knocked on the door as checkout was 12 noon today. Since the door was locked from inside they suddenly informed the police.

The body of the deceased has been taken for autopsy to STNM Hospital. The Sikkim police have started an investigation. The police also contacted Bihar Police for more details about the woman and the man.

Sikkim to begin covid-vaccination for children aged 15-18

Sikkim to begin covid-vaccination for children aged 15-18 from January 3, Medical Suprident announced in media.

Last days as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, covid-vaccination for children aged 15 to 18 years is starting from 3rd January 2022, in South District of Sikkim. The inauguration program will be in District Hospital Namchi and at five blocks namely Temi PHC/HWC, Jorethang CHC/HWC, Namthang PHC/HWC, Melli PHC/HWC, and Ravangla PHC/HWC.

As per the guidelines by the Department of Health, registration will be online and onsite but during holidays i.e from 3rd January 2022 to 8th January 2022 only online registration is available to avoid the crowd. Beneficiaries children between 15 to 18 years, need to register themselves in Cowin portal before coming for vaccination.

The online registration will be open on 1st January 2022 at the cowin.gov.in portal. Covaxin is the vaccine used for children aged 15 to 18 years and the interval between two doses is 28 days. The sessions will be conducted at the different health centers as per their schedule given to health workers.

From 10th January 2022, the precautionary dose will be given to Health Care Worker (HCW), FrontLine Worker (FLW), and 60 above with co-morbidity. People above 60 years of age who have co-morbidities will also have the option to take the booster dose on a recommendation from doctors. This will also start from January 10. The precautionary dose should be taken after 9 months from the administration of the 2nd dose and simultaneously 18 above COVID 19 vaccination continues as before.

“In India, many people are infected with Omicron. So far there is zero cases of Omicron in Sikkim. For further preventable, I would urge all of you not to panic, be careful, and be alert during the new Year. Follow social distance and wash hands and wear a mask,” MS, STNM told the media.

As per the State Health Ministry, Sikkim has reported 10 new COVID-19 cases with 56 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Bars & Pubs can open only till 11 PM on New Year, the Authority has requested the capital town to maintain social distance and avoid crowds while celebrating New Year. The government said on Thursday the Hotels must close by 10 pm and Restaurants / Pubs & Bars by 11 pm due to the chance of the spreading of the third wave of the pandemic.

All Pubs & Bars have to take permission from authorities if no strict action will be taken at the time. The Government and public health experts have warned citizens against triggering another outbreak. An Omicron wave of the Covid-19 pandemic can be fast spread, they warn, maybe even deadlier than the previous one as the virus may evolve.

‘All Private parties are also required to seek official permission and close by 11 pm.’ said SP over video message. 

“Strict legal action will be taken against restaurant and pub owners who don’t follow the latest notifications and appropriate covid restrictions,” said Sardar Police

The statement said that the owners of the restaurants and the bars will be held responsible for strict adherence to Covid guidelines. “In case any violation is found, Strict legal action will be taken against restaurant and pub owners” it added.

A large number of tourists was seen in Gangtok this winter season compared to higher than last years, can rise during a new years time. The third wave of infections — known as Omicron, which was spreading so fast. Several states report a huge single-day spike in Covid-19 cases.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), parts of the Northeast states is likely to receive rainfall with isolated thunderstorm, lightning, and hailstorm in the next 48 hours.

“Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorm, lightning & hailstorm likely over western parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on 29th & over eastern parts on 30th December 2021 and dry weather over the region thereafter,” the IMD said in a press release on Wednesday.

The IMD also said that light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms, lightning & hailstorm are also very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal & Sikkim during the next 24 hours and dry weather thereafter. Heavy rainfall is also likely over north interior Odisha during the next 24 hours.

Dense fog is also expected to blanket these states until Friday, December 31st.

In view of these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch over these states on Wednesday and Thursday, with the advisory urging their residents to ‘be aware of the local weather situation.

These conditions will be caused by the combination of a western disturbance located over Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir, a cyclonic circulation over central parts of Uttar Pradesh, and a trough running from southwest Madhya Pradesh to south Bihar across north Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

As for the mercury levels, the minimum temperatures in Northeast states are likely to remain near normal.

North Sikkim’s Lachung town experienced the first snowfall of the season on the intervening morning of Wednesday. The snowfall started around Morning 4 AM and continue till 7 am.

The town recorded around 2 ft of snow which was a blanket-covered vehicle, hotel, and colony. Many vehicles were also stuck in Lachung snowfall which was about to ply to Yumthang valley today due to snowfall.

“We are blessed to witness real snowfall,” Said Neha From Mumbai who is in Lachung wither her family Trip. A heavy rush of tourists was seen outside enjoying snowfall and photography while some were seen dancing outside the hotel. A Couple of tourists from south Kolkata said that they will extend one more day in Lachung after witnessing snowfall for the first time in their life.

Another tourist from Mumbai said that Lachung is capable of ‘mini Switzerland’. since they said they have also visited Switzerland. The snow would give a boost to the New Year season in the coming year.

According to Report from Lachung PS, the Power lines were also damaged in some areas due to the snowfall. There was no electricity in Lachung in last four days and the department is doing all their best to bring power supply. However, there are some reports of some damage caused due to inclement weather in Some parts of North Sikkim.

Meanwhile, the east district administration said they did not allow any vehicle to cross the Changu lake, baba mandir, and Nathula since the last few days due to heavy snowfall which make roads had become slippery, making it very risky. The Gurudongmar lake & Kala Patthar & Zero Point is also closed for the same since a few weeks ago.

According to the west district administration, there were reported snowfalls in various parts of West Sikkim.

Every time, some private Company Digs Sand & Stone in the Rorathang riverside illegally, and Sikkim Govt & Department is Unmoved? Authority action is just an eyewash- an ultimate Drama.

In 2019 The Sikkim Today has published and report that in Jalipool cremation the businessman instead of building that place has used the excavators for quarrying purposes. A full-fledged quarry is operational from this place at the moment, as seen by a passer-by. The final resting place for those following the Hindu rituals has been reduced to a quarrying field by a Contractor, who has sold the tender work to another Businessman for 1 crore.

It is not the first time that this negligent company is creating trouble for the environment and a life threat for civilians in East Sikkim’s Riverbank small village called Rorathang. Each time this company gets easy bail by some nexus between authority and their settings. It’s still happening and local complaints about this are helpless.

Last Months, again some company was caught red-handed smuggling materials from another side of the river (West Bengal side) inside Sikkim crossing river with JCB hampering river course, the Earthmover JCB machine was haphazardly clearing the riverway which according to Forest rule is a highly punishable offense as well as from Police side also for masquerading official Checkpost for ferrying freights and goods.

Also, the place is a highly sinking zone on the riverbank side beside there are some permacultural company was established in riverside. The company has diverted the course of the river towards the basement of the big slide as such in the coming time there could be a big mishap. Adding to this unprecedented manned threats also looms for industrial Units like SDL and Pharma Companies which are established just above the sinking zone.

Forgot about pharma company, the main border highway for Army vehicular movements towards Changu, Nathula is under construction and it could also be badly affected along with civilian traffic (Rorathang, Pakyong, Rongli, and Rhenock) due to detonation works beneath vulnerable sinking zone where this many company constructions is being carried in a rampant way!

In 2019 we published the same news in TST – but this is just an eyewash says, locals youth of Rorathang. Authority just pretends to have acted but in a real sense, everything is set up and drama only.

Gangtok, Dec 28 (IPR) Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh today virtually inaugurated 24 bridges and 3 roads which included “India’s First Indigenous CL 70 Double Line Modular Bridge & “World Highest Motorable Road at Umling La Pass.” The e-inauguration was conducted by Border Roads Organisation and was attended by Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Lt. Gen UT J&K, Chief of Army Staff, DGBR, Lt. Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, and Shri. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science and Technology.

The e-inauguration programme was joined by the Minister for Roads & Bridges Department, Government of Sikkim, Shri Samdup Lepcha, and officials of Roads and Bridges Department and officials of Swastik Project, BRO from the conference hall of Tashiling Secretariat, Gangtok.

The BRO during this year has constructed 102 Roads and Bridges in the country. Today 24 bridges and 3 roads were dedicated to the Nation which included the “India’s First Indigenous CL 70 Double Line Modular constructed at a height of 11000ft on road from Flaghill to Dokala in Sikkim as part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat Scheme. On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Union Defence Minister praised the achievements of BRO to improve the infrastructure development in the border areas of the country thereby ensuring socio-economic development of the regions.

Minister Shri. Samdup Lepcha was also appreciative of the effort made by Project Swastik in Sikkim and further discussed the public requirements in terms of maintenance of existing roads. He also acknowledged the hardship faced by the BRO for constructing roads in remote areas with bad weather conditions but still persisted with giving out their best by connecting various places and bringing the positive socio-economic impact of those areas.

Lachung: is a great place to stay for snow lovers in winter place will all be covered by snow – it is one of the best winter destinations, and you can reach places like Yumthang Valley easily is known as a valley of flowers. The HillRoom hotel is supposed to be amazing in North Sikkim, so if you are looking for a fancy place, this is probably the best pick. 

Gurudongmar: Gurudongmar is an amazing place to travel to in Sikkim in the winter. It is located a bit far in North Sikkim where you’ll find a holy lake with pure blue water and getting there is not as easy since it’s high altitude area with low oxygen support. 

Zuluk: During winters, Zuluk gets draped in fluffy white snow blankets and the scenery becomes even more beautiful. Though the rainfall makes the terrain tricky and slopes hard to explore, the entire scenery surpasses the limits of beauty. So, all in all, sightseeing in Zuluk can be enjoyed at any time of the year depending on your travel interests. Kala Patthar – It’s all black and white – black mountains and white snow. The place is very extremely cold but it will make your trip memorable.

To reach here you have to start from Lachen to reach this place in time. But you have to give an additional charge to the driver for this trip. When you reach Thangu from Lachen, it will take 1 hour from Thangu to reach Kala Patthar.

Katao – It’s known as Mini Switzerland of India, It’s Military Base in North Sikkim but clapped with snow all over, you will feel like you are in Switzerland. The view that you see in Katao is something that you should try to capture as much as possible through your eyes or else your camera. 

Lachen– Heard about Lachen’s Apple, one of the best in India, this is where it comes from. It’s is one of the best villages in North Sikkim which has an attractive tourist spot Lachung monastery which held a grand festival. Lachen is a less-populated beautiful holiday destination with snow-capped mountains which is known as the gateway to the most amazing Gurudongmar and Tso Lhamu lakes. 

Yumthang Valley – Known as a valley of flowers located in North Sikkim which takes two hours drive from Lachung. The Place is a very mesmerizing valley with beautiful views and absolute serenity. You will find lots of seasonal blossoms flowers like Primulas all around the valleys and also the different species of Rhododendrons and Magnolias all around the valley.

Gangtok, December 27 (IPR) A special event to mark the formal opening of Raj Bhavan for tourists and public was organized by Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim at Old Raj Bhavan in Gangtok today. The programme was graced by Governor Shri Ganga Prasad and Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang along with the State First Lady, Smt. Kamala Devi, Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, ADGPs, ACSs, Chairpersons, Advisors, CMO officials, Heads of Departments and other dignitaries.

The programme was also attended by representatives of various organisations namely Sikkim Amateur Mountaineering Association (SAMA), Sikkim United Tourism Organisation (SUTO), Sikkim Association of Adventure Tour Operators (SAATO), Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS), All Sikkim Luxury Vehicle Association (ASLVA), Homestay Association of Sikkim (HAS), Sikkim Paragliding Association (SPA), Luxury Vehicle Association (LVA), All Sikkim Travels and Hospitality Association (ASTHA) and Owner Run Hotel Association of Sikkim (ORHAS) along with tourists from different parts of the country.

It may be recalled that the historic decision of the opening of Raj Bhavan for tourists and local gentry from January 1, 2022 was announced by the Governor earlier this month.

At the outset of the event, Secretary, Raj Bhavan, Shri Raj Yadav in his address accorded warm welcome to all the dignitaries while briefing the gathering about the various amenities available at the Raj Bhavan premises at present including the statues of Subhash Chandra Bose and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a 70-ft flag mast hoisting the National flag, medicinal plants farm, etc. Raj Bhavan will be open for public viewing from 1st January, 2022 between 10 am to 12 pm in the morning and between 2 pm to 4 pm in the evening, he added.

Chief Engineer, Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Shri Neeraj Pradhan, in his commemoration speech highlighted the areas in the Raj Bhavan which would be made accessible to the public and tourists. He also cited various historical events related to the Old Raj Bhavan and expressed that the opening of the Raj Bhavan for public viewing will enable people to relive the glorious history and harmonious setting of the Raj Bhavan premises.

Thereafter, Governor Shri Ganga Prasad and Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated the Photo Exhibition organised by the IPR Department and also released ‘The Heritage Building of Raj Bhavan at Gangtok’ brochure.

On the occasion, the Governor and the Chief Minister were felicitated by Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) and Positude Event Management team.

Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, in his address, extended gratitude to the Governor for envisioning the development of tourism sector in the State through his historical decision of opening the Raj Bhavan for public and tourists. He also thanked the Governor for prioritising the agriculture, education and allied sectors and guiding the State government to work towards the upliftment of the people of Sikkim.

He stated that the opening of the Raj Bhavan will be an additional asset for attracting both tourists and the local gentry thus boosting tourism in the State of Sikkim. He added that State government will continue extending its full support towards infrastructure development to further create employment opportunities and to encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth of the State.

Highlighting on the various schemes of the central and state governments initiated to support the entrepreneurs in tourism sector, the Chief Minister urged all the travel agencies and stakeholders to work towards showcasing the hospitality of the people of Sikkim and also motivated all towards transforming Sikkim into the next wedding destination in the near future.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Shri Ganga Prasad said that with the opening of the heritage building of Raj Bhavan for public viewing, people can now revel in the splendorous beauty and architecture of the building. He stated that this initiative will also be a stepping stone in bringing the eventful changes in the political history of the State while highlighting the documentation of Sikkim’s transformation into a democratic State of Independent India.

The Governor reiterated the central government’s mission of making India ‘atmanirbhar’ and commended the State government’s contributions towards encouraging people’s proactive participation in being ‘vocal for local’. He further added that he has adopted two GPUs in the State of Sikkim namely Navey-Shotak and Ben-Phegyong for the all-round development of the villages.

Applauding Sikkim for promoting tourism and organic farming at a wide scale, the Governor stressed on the potential of saffron farming here in Sikkim and added that its future prospects will surely be called up in the coming days.

He further urged all to make a commitment towards working for the betterment of the society and the nation as a whole to successfully commemorate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav that celebrates 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of it’s people, culture and achievements.

The programme also featured a cultural extravaganza presented by local artists with the light and sound show being one of the main highlights of the event.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Additional Secretary, Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Shri Kapil Meena.

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) has awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physics to Dr. Pronita Chettri for her thesis titled “Effect of electron beam and plasma irradiation on the structural, electrical properties and thermopower of mixed-valence manganites with perovskite structure”. The Degree has been awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examination of Sikkim Manipal University ( SMU ) in the open defence Viva-Voce Examination conducted on 24th of November 2021 with an expert External Examiner from IIT Delhi.

Dr. Pronita Chettri is a faculty in the Department of Physics, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Majitar, Sikkim. She pursued her research work under the Supervision of Dr. Utpal Deka, Professor of Physics, SMIT, and Dr. Ashok Rao, Professor of Physics, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka. She has published her study findings in reputed International Journals and also presented several scientific papers in National and International Conferences. Her oral presentation was conferred the Best Paper Award in International Conference on Mechanical Materials and Renewable Energy 2018.

The Doctor of philosophy will be awarded to her during the next Convocation of Sikkim Manipal University.
