Sikkim – A land of Protest or Protected ?

Sikkim a land of protest ?

“Ladies and gentlemen, before the headline makes you uneasy, hold onto your horses. There is no harm in asking a question. Someone put this question to me: Is Sikkim Land of Protest or Protected? I am just forwarding the reader some probable answers and thoughts.

One small hope is that there will be no more experiments. That democracy will truly be given a chance. What lessons have been learned regarding the danger of ‘fifth-generation warfare’, which now threatens the very edifice of the state? What had started with dissident activists being dubbed as traitors has now led to state institutions being maligned as such. Unchecked, this can plunge Sikkim into a sad state of affairs, the signs of which are rearing their ugly protest head at our schools and universities, DAC, and even hospitals.

No good has come of this experiment when activities from SPYF protested against the government regarding the improvement of healthcare. Position as well as Opposition has done nothing but mislead the youth of Sikkim and several adults by giving different opinions to the press. Our state, Sikkim respects democracies where citizens and elected politicians should listen to each other like the recent case of land grabbing by Pharma Company in Jorethang. Instead, the opposition used him for their sake of political attention.

SKM is welcome to participate as a democratic party but it’s clearly not interested in the voice of the citizen. They were always there for people who used to participate in protests before 2019 if it was a pharma company worker or teacher or SYPF or any Youth. When SYPF marched in DC court in 2019 it was SKM (Opposition then) who went there to support them in no time are seen nowhere now. SDF was ruling then used to hide like it’s none of their business SKM is doing the same today. Nothingness some officials prefer to threaten activities instead. So what now?

One would like to empathise with them if the politicians didn’t make it so hard. Instead of acknowledging that Forest ministers couldn’t deliver Justice when land protected by 371F is being grabbed or that it isn’t easy for politicians to stay on the same page as the establishment beyond a few years due to fear of giant companies like pharma, they will go on a rampage about how people don’t trust activities because of the disappearance of former activities Laten Sherpa who used to do same before 2019 can no longer be seen nowadays?

Given our history of the state which is protected by 371F, it may be difficult to conclude that the establishment has become apolitical. But one can definitely say this — what a breath of fresh air this press conference was compared to those held by John Rai in beginning and later he was used for political opportunity.

The short answer is — that our new politician failed spectacularly. There is no other logical explanation for the establishment’s change of heart, and sudden desire to go neutral. The trouble is, while those in high offices realized that the old protesting experiment hadn’t worked and the course had to be corrected, those lower down the rungs were slow to get the memo. Tried having a conversation with 2018 & 2022 activities lately?

And we have the same faces in terms of board management that we’ve had for the last two decades or so. How barren are Sikkim’s intellectual reserves!

The Protest circle, though, does not move endlessly. At some point, it will stop. But then let us also try to figure out what we have, and where (and how) are we headed?

Interview story with an Eminent International Jurist Author Poet WRITER Author Thinker Shri Pamarty VenkatRamana.

0
" Shri Pamarty VenkatRamana"

SriRamana ( Pamarty Venkataramana) is a renowned Jurist, Columnist,Author and award winning Poet based in New Delhi.

His latest work, a Book of Short Stories titled -‘The Whispering Star’ published from Europe is creating ripples as an exemplary work and western critics pronounce it to be a sensation for Class, Variety and Style of Writing.

The Stories revolve around how Santana Dharma can help recreate a new world of peace, happiness and wisdom.

A better life, a better society and a better world can be created by each one of us if we follow the philosophy of this learned Author as portrayed through charachters in his marvellous stories.

Pranay Kumar has interviewed this Celebrity Author covering a wide range of topics for us.

Here are excerpts.

  1. The art of writing has become a dead form and calligraphy is a forgotten craft in the age of instant communication via tweets and text messages. Is this true?

SriRamana –

Not really. Writing is a forever pleasurable exercise. Reading follows it. Modern day gadgets and applications no doubt have reduced the length, time and charm of long formats of communication. If once precis writing was supposed to have displaced long essays writing, nowadays tweets have come to per force curtail the expansive thinking enjoyed by men of letters. Be it essays or novels, fiction and non-fiction still hold their place of pride in the world of Literature.

  1. You are a celebrity in your field of global Law practice. How did you transform into a celebrated Author-Poet?

SriRamana –

Law is my chosen profession. The professional training in fields of Company Secretary, Chartered Accountancy,Cost and Works Accountancy has helped became a better lawyer with a heady combination.
But, early success turns one into a workaholic. Since the magic of success in practice from day one, literally, turns into a curse, so to speak and personal life becomes nil . What then does one do,especially with being a Columnist for international and national magazines, etc, when time is scarce? You graduate to thekevel of condensing your thoughts into Essays. Then, with further stress on time, Poetry becomes your style of expression. I have been authoring all these Books amidst a 21/7 gruelling work lifestyle.

  1. But,who is your inspiration to write?

SriRamana –

My Father is a famous writer. School and Home have laid the foundation for this passion. Most essays have been penned in the middle of night for thoughts do not let you rest in peace, unless you put them down on to paper or on the iPad.

  1. Why do we not see other lawyers and judges take up writing?

SriRamana –

Each unto own. There are many who have written in the past and still do. Genres of writing depends on one’s penchant.

  1. Most writers use PR agencies to make money. But,you have instead dedicated all proceeds from your writings to education of girl children in Asia & Africa. Why?

SriRamana –

In course of my travels around the globe in connection with my legal matters, I noticed that these two continents have been given a raw deal by advanced economies.
As the old adage goes, Child is the father of Man and an empowered Girl child would do more for growth of society than any elected bunch of leaders can. Girls and women by and large have been found to be handed out a raw deal in all multi-cultural lands. This anomaly can be rectified if we address this situation in our individual level too. The ripple effect would restore sanity to the world at large.

  1. What do you say about women empowerment in India?

SriRamana –

Santana Dharma worships Woman even as a Girl-child. Last few centuries have seen denigration and exploitation of women starting from Mughal hordes to Pirates from European lands. In a country without uniform civil code, the malady is compounded. A major step would be for Parliament to enact a law providing fifty per cent reservation for women in legislative assemblies & Lol Sabha.

  1. Your Book -‘The Whispering Star’ has received critical acclaim even in western countries. What is the magic you have scripted?

SriRamana –

The Whispering Star is a book of short stories in which I have tried to assimilate situations and correlate them to tenets of our Sanatana Dharma. It is the first of its kind am told in the new millennium from western hemisphere by an Indian author. As the reader passes from the first chapter that portrays an eye opening experience of the Pope in his travel to India, the remaining stories lead you to eye-witness experiences of dancing Yoginis ,a tryst with God and many more surrealistic episodes. The aim of the Book is to help restore faith of Mankind in Divinity in order that Humanity is reborn through a discovery of the Self and extending compassion towards all society.

  1. What is your message to educational institutions and newspapers in today’s scenario?

SriRamana –

Reform syllabus in text books starting from first standard of the primary school level.

a. Include Basic Law and Civics as a subject from primary section.

b. Inculcate a passionate love for arts and literature from secondary school level.

c. Sponsor educational trips to hospitals and government departments, to orient them with future societal life.

d. Newspapers can sponsor literary contests.

e. Educational institutions must encourage creativity among each and every pupil.

  1. What is the simplest lifestyle remedy you would advocate to young generation of school goers and college students, for a healthy, happy life?

SriRamana –

Wake up early. Walk, jog long even as the sun rises. Play outdoor sports. Fix a study timetable. Cut down on smartphone timings to bare essentials. Connect to Mother Nature and your elders as well as siblings more as you might with virtual strangers online. Eat healthy. Smile more. Appreciate good manners. Be kind to one another. Compassion and mercy bring more joy than any other pursuit. Inculcate hobbies like arts and crafts, singing, writing, reading or gardening. Distance yourself from wrong company and peers with vices. Be an eternal optimist and work hard with passion. Stay safe and healthy and confident always, under any circumstances of life.

Thank you.

Sikkim shouldn’t be the land of Tambola

0
Tambola

In recent days Sikkimese Youth has been organizing fairs (Mela) in different places where Tambola seemed to be the main event even more than the sports and other entertaining activities. Many teenagers were seen engaged in this game as it doesn’t have any age restrictions. Few people get rewarded by luck and others just waste their money and more importantly time.

We have been through the most difficult time in our lives as the Noble Corona Virus affected humans globally. But just after a few months, here we are again doing the same stupid things even not realizing what will be the consequences if one in a thousand is infected by this virus. Such a huge no. of people were being attracted daily just by seeing the prize pool of Tambola. People were coming all the way from West Bengal and other states too to try their luck and some might have been lucky also. Nothing was maintained as per the guidelines of Covid- 19 and much educated employed youth and unemployed youths were also engaged just for the sum of money which doesn’t seem good for the future of Sikkim.

It is somehow not lesser than a loot. Stealing money from thousands and making one rich overnight. Encourage your own lives, do not organize a game like Tambola to lure our youths and earn some money. Don’t make this game a recreational drug for the people of Sikkim.

It is high time to develop the minds of Sikkimese youngsters rather than encouraging them to play a fool’s game like Tambola. It should be banned forever in the state. Organize games like Chess competitions, and sports events, teach them the benefits of Modern Tourism that is flourishing rapidly in the state, organic farming, entrepreneurship, Skill development schemes and many more.

Even the government has provided so many platforms for the unemployed youths to eradicate unemployment in the state. Youth must need to take benefits from those kinda schemes. Have you ever been to an office where you have to pay Rs. 1000/- for a form that the department provides? I guess not because there’s not. Have you ever tried on schemes that Government is providing today? I guess not. But why Tambola? Why waste time and money on such a luring trap? Don’t make our youth feel greedy. Money earned without hard work will spoil one’s own capability. Because money is like a chain that slaves wear, Knowledge is the kingly crown.

Authority Needs to Act on Tambola

I hope the government will soon ban the practice of Tambola in the state. No permission should be given by the higher authorities. It will surely bring happiness to a mother from a poor family to a wife whose husband doesn’t care about their daily needs, to a son whose father doesn’t care to pay his school fees in time, to a daughter who wants her daddy to be home in time and to a father whose teenager son is after the huge amount of money knowing nothing about how to be a good son to his family. May Sikkim be the place for brilliant minds. May this game will be abolished forever.

Okayti celebrates the first plucking of the season with grandeur.

Okayti celebrates the first plucking

Okayti, Darjeeling, March 30, 2022 – Okayti Tea Estate, Mirik, Darjeeling celebrated the plucking of its first flush leaves like never before. Darjeeling First Flush is a much-awaited tea for every tea connoisseur and it is made with the leaves that the tea plant shoots after 3-4 months of hibernation. The tea is generally lighter than the other flushes and has a typical characteristic true only to the first
flush teas. Usually, the first flush leaves are withered longer and less oxidized than other flushes and are packed with polyphenols and catechins that not only flavor the tea with nuanced floral notes but also energize the body in a way no other beverage can. It is perhaps the most sought after tea in the world.

To commemorate the significant event of plucking the first flush leaves, Okayti organized a vivid one-day event where every aspect of the first flush Darjeeling tea was celebrated. For the first time in the history of Darjeeling, such an event was
organized where tea sommeliers and important figures of the Darjeeling tea industry were invited to witness as closely as possible the process of making ‘the champagne of teas’. “Okayti has always celebrated its people without which no tea is possible. This event is not only to celebrate the flush teas but it is also to celebrate the people who make it happen and who provide the world with the finest tea.” – Mr Rajeev Baid, CEO & MD of Okayti Tea Company commented.

The guests were allowed to take in the marvelous view of mountains in different shades of green and blue as far as the eyes could see. Mr Baid also took a moment to ceremoniously thank the tea plants which have been supporting thousands of people for more than a hundred years. “Over the years, the tea plant has proved to be something so very closely associated with the people of Darjeeling. It is a source of their identity and motivation. We should always be thankful for that.” – Mr Baid
added.

(Mr Rajeev Baid addressing the audience)

A section of the estate with the finest Darjeeling tea cultivars was selected beforehand and as the event unfolded the best and experienced pluckers all adored in the traditional attire appeared with the quintessential bamboo baskets on their backs. First Flush leaves and buds are very small compared to other flushes making it harder for the pluckers. The pluckers hovered from one bush to another plucking the most succulent leaves of the season on the brightly lit day. The plucked leaves were offered to Mr Baid, the CEO which was later carefully taken to
the factory where they will be processed meticulously to be the most revered tea.

To acknowledge the hard work of the workers, Mr Baid also handed gifts and mementoes as a token of appreciation to those workers who have proven to be a great asset to the company. And he also appreciated the family members of the
workers who had achieved things erstwhile unthinkable of them.
Today also marked the 1st anniversary of Mr Rajeev Baid taking up Okayti Tea Estate. Within just a year, he has made many changes. Health staff were recruited and a new dispensary was built. Constructions of several weighing sheds are going
on across the tea garden to unburden the workers. Otherwise, the workers have to take the plucked leaves to the factory themselves. ‘Every requirement of the workers are taken care of by the new management and we hope best for the estate
as well as for the workers.’ – Mr Baid determinedly added from the dice and a cheering sound of claps and joy from the workers was followed afterwards.
As the connoisseurs globally await for the first flush teas, Okayti seems ready to enthral the taste buds yet again.

Missing Arunachal Pradesh boy found by PLA

"Missing Arunachal Pradesh boy founded by PLA"

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Thursday (January 27) handed over the missing 17-year-old boy from Arunachal Pradesh, Miram Taron, to the Indian Army.

“The Chinese PLA handed over the young boy from Arunachal Pradesh Shri Miram Taron to Indian Army at WACHA-DAMAI interaction point in Arunachal Pradesh today. I thank our proud Indian Army for pursuing the case meticulously with PLA and safely securing our young boy back home,” Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju said in a tweet on Thursday.

17-year-old Miram Taron from Zido village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district, reportedly went missing on Tuesday (January 18).

Earlier on Wednesday (January 19), State MP Tapir Gao alleged that Miram Taron was abducted by the PLA from inside Indian territory.

“Chinese #PLA has abducted Sh Miram Taron, 17 years of Zido vill. yesterday 18th Jan 2022 from inside Indian territory, Lungta Jor area (China built 3-4 kms road inside India in 2018) under Siyungla area (Bishing village) of Upper Siang dist, Arunachal Pradesh,” he said in a tweet.”

Who Controls Sikkim’s Tourism?

0
"Foreign Tourist with villager and horse"

Couched below a picture of the Himalayan Red Panda, the state Animals, the inscription on a pamphlet by the Sikkim’s Tourism Department reads, “Sikkim- Where Nature Smile.” They often dubbed “Satyajit Ray’s 1971 famous banned movie called “Sikkim” which describes Sikkim markets itself as a “high-end” and “Premium” tourism destination for exclusive people.

The state’s tourism is inspired by the Mountain which controls by outside force with no license sending cheap packages which package includes “Harassment & over Charging” in the ends, where the tourism department doesn’t even know how to control this all and who benefits into it. Puspalal, a simple driver from west Sikkim used to face maximum harassment from tourists as his package was sent as “Maximum visit in lesser charge”

Whereas many people used to say Sikkim’s economy depend on tourism, nevertheless it’s not true, unlike ladhak & Bhutan all homestay and hotel run by the owner itself as target rural tourism, but here in Sikkim despite being small state entire hotel own by retired offical who simply want to lease to Bengali businessman which doesn’t contribute to the local economic engine. If you go to Zuluk of East maximum number of people who control tourism is from Nepal, 2019 Indian Army asked Sikkim Government to evaluate non-resident people from that area whereas opposition party opposed and govt failed to control it, zuluk is actually controlled by an army which attaches maximum tourist but what is the benefit for the state?

Rather than quantity, Sikkim should focus on a multidimensional strategy of development for long run that propagates the idea that human development goes beyond economic growth and involves social, environmental, cultural, and governance dimensions.

In just under half a century since Sikkim merged with India, in 1975, the industry has emerged as one of the most important sectors for GNH-driven growth in 2002. The state wan to focus on bringing a large number of quantity tourists instead of focusing on quality tourists who bring “high value, low volume” which emphasises maximising the economic benefits of tourism—through generating increased employment and foreign-currency reserves—while minimising its negative impacts on the indigenous culture and environment by controlling tourist arrivals through a daily-tariff system.

In 2009, however, Sikkim’s tourism took a major turn when the government announced a “high tourist, more revenue” policy, which was one of the bigger blunders done by the Chamling government. Following the policy, Sikkim witnessed a significant increase in regional tourist arrivals from countries such as Kolkota, Bihar, and South India—the number of the regional tourist grew to 27,834 and 33,091 tourists in January and February 2009 respectively against 18,122 and 20,430 in 2008. But the decline of foreign tourists was also seen in the same years when Bhutan witnessed a massive increase of foreign tourists on a limited basis.

Sikkim known as a kingdom once, a small country ruled by the Maharaja of Sikkim, where Satyajit ray once said, Sikkim markets itself as a “high-end” and “Premium” tourism destination for exclusive people like Bhutan due to its kingdom rule. Nevertheless, we focused on more “Quantity than Quality” which made no people ever benefit from tourism even airplanes started flying in Sikkim.

Take the example of Namthang- Rateypani Village about 21 kilometers from the gateway to Sikkim also known as an organic farming village attach no tourism as there is nothing to show anything. Few tourists stop there who are on the way to West Sikkim. Quantity of Tourism only focuses on two things – Mountain and Snow whereas Quality of Tourism attaches everything from farming to adventure to rural connection in large number which can be frequently attraction.

A few days ago in seasonal time, there was a large number of complaints coming from visitors, some claimed that they had extremely bad experience traveling to Sikkim.

What can be more than a bad example of Ranka Amusement Park & Banjhakri falls, where a family of four traveled from Gangtok to Ranka to see something up there, when in return, they found out the gate with sealed lock with written temporary closed.

In Social Media, Saurabh Mishra thought Sikkim is a very less populated area with good transportation can go via bus who later wrote in Social Media “The Taxi Service in Sikkim is very unorganised. They will cramp a 7 seater SUV with 10 people… like a herd of cattle, in Sikkim. a very bad state of public transportation”

On the same comment made by another visitor, “Sikkim treats tourists arrogantly, and yes we did find kind of people especially women at the stall but the driver and hotel owner was very impolite and the service was bad too. Vegetarians should go to Sikkim just to strive or be treated badly”

But the question is everyone is questioning about tourism control in Sikkim who’s behind the back? As both Banjhakri Falls and Ranka Park are temporarily closed due to non-payment of lease amount crore. Why lease them when they can’t or don’t know how to operate tourism business or it’s just political motive to give whoever they want to with political connection. Everyone knows Sikkim’s people are so keen to lease out hotels to other people and keep complaining about influxes surge. Also, Hotel doesn’t employ local because they can easily find cheap labor from Bengal or Bihar. The majority of the private employees in Sikkim are migrated from Darjeeling.

Tourism in Sikkim doesn’t need explanation if it goes into Quality way which will run for the long term, quality of tourism will bring bold revenue like Bhutan, they don’t even care they just wanted to be more quality in tourism. The last time Bhutan imposed 1200 Rupees per day fees to Indian large number of Quality tourists turned up.

The government of Sikkim needs to think about building Quality of Tourism, focusing on the large number in rural than in urban ones. Soon tourism will vanish if nothing was done for the development of tourism.

It can easily affect the development and behavior in the era of social media if someone complains. If someone posts how driver and hotel owner is harassing in Sikkim on the social media platform they will find a way to change the destination to Ladhak who are working more in quality of tourism by local himself, it can harm Sikkim’s tourism in future.
