iCloud will now Scan Child Abuse Images

0
iCloud UPLOADS TO BE SCANNED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

AFTER MAJOR TECHGIANTS LIKE GOOGLE, FACEBOOK AND MICROSOFT, APPLE’s iCloud HAS NOW ANNOUNCED A SYSTEM TO DETECT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL IN DEVICES BASED IN US.

Apple on Thursday announced their decision to implement a system to check whether the uploads comply to the guidelines in the States. The database of US National Center of Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and other child safety organizations will be used. The computer system made to detect known abuse images will be called as NeuralMatch. While unveiling their plans for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, they talked about this tool. There are rumors that Apple plans to even scan users’ encrypted chats for child safety.

NGOs working for Child Safety and Rights have appreciated the steps taken by Apple Inc. towards child safety and protection. Significantly, Apple previously has been under pressure from the US governments due to their strict privacy policies.

HOW DOES THE TOOL WORK?

Before uploading an image on iCloud, the on-device system will run a matching process by turning the images into hashes. Then comparing with known CSAM hashes. The known Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) will be fetched from various child safety organizations. In case, the image fails the test performed by NeuralMatch, the trillion-dollar company will do a manual review of each report to confirm whether the tool was accurate or not. The company claims the system to have extremely high level of accuracy. Along with the false positive cases below one in a trillion.

In case, the user’s upload fails even in a manual review. They plan to take actions against those users including disabling accounts and reporting to the authorities.

Moreover, Apple as of now plans only to scan iCloud uploads and not users’ personal libraries storing data locally. They also told, if users feel that their accounts have been unlawfully locked can appeal for unlocking of the accounts.

PRIVACY CONCERNS

Several civil liberties groups have raised concerns over Apple’s tool. They called it a betrayal of users’ trust on the company’s privacy policy. Some cybersecurity experts also cautioned that this could lead to scanning of devices generally by governments to shut political dissents. Also, this tool would make computer researchers impossible to check whether Apple is obeying to the pre-decided usage of the tool or not. Matthew Green, a security researcher at Johns Hopkins University said, ”Whether they turn out to be right or wrong on that point hardly matters. This will break the dam- governments will demand it from everyone.”

Though the company says that this new tool offers ample amount of privacy to the users and only cross-checks for CSAM. But there always exists a back-door for iCloud compromise on the users’ privacy when the authorities want.

TWO YEARS SINCE ABROGATION OF ARTICLE 370: KASHMIR MOVES FORWARD TO DEVELOPMENT IN ITS TRUEST SENSE

0
article 370 The Sikkim Today

It has been two years since the present, PM Modi led NDA government on 5th August 2019, took a historical move by revoking decades-long controversial Article 370 and Article 35A in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). It ensured everyone in J&K come at par with the rest of the nation by securing all the rights and privileges accessible to the citizens of the country. The articles proved to be an inhibitor for the growth and development of the region.

With its annulment, the region is witnessing a rapid pace of all-around growth and development. Although with regard to the overall political situation in Kashmir valley, some might argue that it has been a slow and long path since the abrogation of disputed articles. The recent all party meeting in New Delhi on June 24th 2021 with PM Modi gave hopes to all the stakeholders. However, at present, the center is looking forward to start the next level of political transition-assembly elections- in the UT. Also, to seek support for the legitimacy of the delimitation process.

Positive Changes:

Amidst all this, it is hard to overlook the positive changes in the social and economical fronts since the abrogation of the disputed articles. Gender equality, equal rights to West Pakistan refugees (WPR) along with equal rights to SC, ST and other backwards sections of society have become major tools for development.

Gender Equality-

Concerning gender equality, things have changed a lot. New opportunities, have opened up for women in the region in a safer environment towards personal and social development. Kashmiri women are at par with Kashmiri men as their ‘State Subject Status’ and their property rights are in their hands.

Marginal Rights-

The refugees from West Pakistan, deprived of the citizenship of the state and not issued the permanent resident certificate (PRC). Similarly, the sanitation workers brought to the state in 1953 to quell protests were also deprived of their citizenship rights. The Abrogation of Article 370 ushered in a new ray of hope for these marginalized sections by providing them citizenship.

‘Naya Kashmir’:

In this ‘changing Kashmir’, the youth have moved far from the ‘stone-pelting Fridays’ to talks of education, business and development. The unemployment rate has reduced significantly, wherein thousands of young aspiring entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the government’s financial support. The central government has also taken steps in establishing premium Indian educational institutes like IIT, IIM and AIIMS in the region. This assures the betterment of youth and to channelize them towards education.

Mega Projects:

With regard to mega projects in the erstwhile state, the central government has sanctioned funds. These are essential for fast and sustained development in the region. As many as 15 power projects inaugurated and the foundation stone for 20 others worth Rupees ten thousand crores laid. Increasing the power production capacity of J&K to 20,000 MW.

Separately, the Jammu Baramula Railway Line fast-tracked and is nearing its completion. The world’s highest railway bridge over river Chenab made, considered to be an engineering marvel. Also on Jan 7, 2021, the central government approved an industrial development project worth Rupees 28,400 crore for the UT.

Tourism and other businesses:

Furthermore, the government has reiterated its focus on tourism for the land to be known as ‘heaven on earth’. With easing rules for both small businessmen and tourists on all fronts by approving a business revival package of Rupees 1,352.99 crore. The government also initiated the new Wool Processing, Handicrafts and Handloom Policy, 2020. This revives the horticulture and handicraft industries, which providing livelihood to about 30 lakh people directly and indirectly in Kashmir.

Curbing Terrorism:

Moving our focus to terrorism, incidents of violence have reduced significantly in Kashmir valley. According to the MHA report, security forces have achieved major success against terrorists. Terror-related activities also reduced to one-third in the valley after the abrogation of Article 370. A 40% decrease of involvement of brainwashed local youth of Kashmir valley to take up arms against India.

Although the road from abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A has been rough politically. Due to many external and internal entities, the step of integration of people to people by revocation of the articles has proven to be a maiden step towards equality for citizens of J&K. This ensures of providing equal rights to deprived sections, at par with citizens of rest of the country. Further, also proved to be a milestone in the assimilation of J&K with rest of India. This abrogation acts as a foundation stone for the new J&K along with a bridge connecting the region with the rest of India in its truest sense.

iPhone 13

iPHONE 13 PAVING WAY FOR INTEGRATED PASSIVE DEVICES (IPD’S):

Apple gave an update to the public and media of soon launching their new product, iPhone13 in the market. They also said that there will be a big surprise for everyone because the iPhone13 will be a next-level iPhone till date.

Apple revealed that IPhone13 will have a 120Hz LTPO display on both the Pro models with the improved battery life. Though battery life has been improved from iPhone X but IPhone13 has been summed up version. This will give out better results than other models and thanks to the efficient 5G modem. They also revealed that they have focused on camera also and also launched a new mode i.e. Video Portrait Mode. IPhone13 will be a device with a notch that is shrunk. There are rumors spread that at least one version of the new iPhone may come with a port less design. So we might see a display gracing the iPhone

Latest updates given by Apple till 1st August:

  • The supplier of iPhone13 chips TSMC was effected by gas contamination. However, it doesn’t seem that there will be any delay or it has affected Apple’s Production timeline.
  • A report said that Apple has ordered more than 100 million of A15 bionic chips for iPhone13
  • Apple may offer fast 2watt charging, which will compete with Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

IPhone13 release date and Price:

Due to coronavirus the launch of iPhone12 was delayed, but this time the release date is expected in September. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone13 will be launched at the normal schedule i.e. September.

The supplier of A15 bionic chips for iPhone13 i.e. TSMC has been hit by gas contamination in July according to Nikkei Asia. But it doesn’t seem that this has impacted the release date of iPhone13 based on the report.

In 2020, Apple warned that the launch date of the IiPhone12 will not be in September. But in 2021 Apple announced earnings for its June quarter, they didn’t wait for anything and announced to launch iPhone13. Apple did call some shortage issues, but it hasn’t affected the release dates of iPhone13.

If Apple releases iPhone13 according to the schedule, then we can see iPhone13 on the fourth Friday of September. According to the calendar, the date on the fourth Friday of September is September 24.

iPhone13 price:

Till now there is an approximate idea that, iPhone 13 will cost around $699, $799, $999 and $1099, respectively. Apple tends to keep the price of each model relatively close to the preceding model

A report by TrendForce said that iPhone13 should be relatively on par with the current iPhone13 models. TrendForce also said that the iPhone13 Pro models won’t have a 1TB storage option.

There are rumors also spread that the size of iPhone13 will be the same as iPhone12: 5.4 –inch iPhone13 mini, a 6.1 –inch iPhone13, a 6.1 inch iPhone13 Pro and a 6.7 –inch iphone13 Pro Max.

As of now the sale of the iPhone12 Mini has not been so tremendous as compared to other models iPhone12. Reports claims that Apple is still launching the iPhone13 mini. Let’s assume that there will be four models that will be launching in September and these will be in the iPhone13 family. A 5G iPhoneSE is not expected to be launched until next year. But iPhone Flip may be launched within the next two years.

iPhone13 name:

Earlier rumors pointed Apple will give a certain name to iPhone13 series, since Apple went from iPhone11 to iPhone12 last year. There are rumors spread that Apple will be launching the iPhone13 series as iPhone 12s.

However, till the release we are not sure about what will be the name. A new report claims that Apple will be sticking to the name of iPhone13. According to the report in the Economic Daily News, the iPhone13 will be the mirror of the iPhone12 on the basis of design and name.

iPhone 13 design:

A set of iPhone13 dummy units have gotten the hands-on treatment by Apple insider. Some of the biggest inbuilt changes such as of speaker that will be placed on the top of the device. There is a new diagonal arrangement for regular iPhone13 and a larger camera module for iPhone13 Pro.

The SIM card slot will move down the device and the positions of the power button, will also be moved down a little bit.

iPhone13 Pro Max could be slightly larger than its predecessor. There is also a variety of information that has been leaked that the iPhone13 will come with a smaller notch compared to the notches that were in the iPhone12 series, the notch with processor series is somewhere bulky.

Apple will design this type of notch by downsizing on the new iPhone by combining the separated infrared flood illuminator, sensor and dot projector, which is the same as the iPhone12’s face ID unlocking system. In iPhone13 we can see two new sensors and a narrower notch on top of the screen.

Digitimes’ report:

Digitimes has given a separate report that the die size of the VCSEL chips that are used in the face ID unlocking system is shrunk by 40 to 50% which means that the iPhone13 will come up with the smaller notch

The earpiece speaker would no longer be housed in the notch but it is placed on the top bezel. The dummy of iPhone13 Pro max dummy gave an idea that itx could be slightly thicker than iPhone12 pro max

A rumor that was spread out was that iPhone13 would be getting an under-display Touch ID because from last year it is necessary to wear a mask and some people remove their mask to unlock their iPhone so to avoid this, touch ID can be placed under the display.

iPhone13 colors:

The rumors spread about iPhone13 colors that there are four color options for-black, silver, rose gold and sunset gold.

iPhone13 specs:

The chip might be upgraded as in iPhone12 A14 bionic chip was used. But the reports said that in iPhone13 A15 bionic chip can be used which is a powerful chip than the A14 chip.

A report came out that Apple has ordered up to 100 million A15 chips which mean Apple is expecting more high demand for iPhone13 than iPhone12.

In storage, the iPhone13 can go up from 64 GB to 512GB, though a new analyst report said that the iPhone13 can get up to 1TB of storage. This is the highest storage that any iPhone will have till now.

iPhone13 cameras:

The reports suggested that iPhone13 Pro and iPhone13 Pro Max will be offered with six new ultra-wide lenses. iPhone 12 Pro models sport a 5 element ultra wide-angle lens. It’s a rule that the more elements in a lens, the better the quality of the image.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claims that the iPhone13 series will offer ultra-wide autofocus which will give more sharp image.  Analyst Ross Young had predicted that Apple phones will come with large sensors for starters. Larger sensors mean more light intake by the sensors and camera. This will help to boost the quality of low light pictures

iPhone13 battery and Charging:

The iPhone12 models do not have a good battery life test. But iPhone12 pro max has impressed with its large battery. Mingh Chi Kuo said about the so-called soft battery technology in iPhone 13 that the new iPhones can offer increased battery capacity without growing the design footprint.

The iPhone13 pro max has gained an 18% increase from 3,687 Mah to 4,352 mAH. The iPhone12 maxes out at 20w charging, but Apple is offering 25w charging this year. The iPhone13 could offer reverse wireless charging which means the iPhone can now charge Airpods and Apple Watch.

iPhone13 and iOS 15:

The top iOS 15 features include updates to FaceTime that will allow you to watch videos and share content. Also, a new Focus mode for managing notifications, and improvements in maps, messages, wallet, weather and other in-built apps.

IPhone 13 may come up with the feature hidden in iOS 1t. The key feature is that the iPhone 13 could understand and learn the predictive charging notifications. This system would learn your phone usage and charging habits, much like Optimized Charging does already. However, it will warn you that when you have to charge your device when you’re at a suitable place.

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir

A strong determination for creating New Face of India by the 75th year of Independence in 2022. India’s 74th year of Independence showcases, how India has progressed in military, space, education and health. Respecting the collaborative efforts during the epidemic by frontliners and cross border issue management. Commemorating 50 years of Indian Armed Forces victory over Pakistan in 1971. India has also taken over the UNSC presidency for the month of August 2021.

Further, India’s envoy to United Nations Tirumurti said, “Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India. If there needs to be a change in status, it is the vacation of Pakistan occupied Kashmir” while responding to a journalist who asked about the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir at a press conference.

Brief Background:

Pakistan occupied Kashmir is part of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan hence an integral part of India. It has been illegitimately under the control of Pakistan since 22 October, 1947. Tribal lashkars supported by Pakistan had invaded the then princely state of J&K. After which the ruler of the Jammu and Kashmir state acceded to India by signing –

Instrument Of Accession according to which the Dominion Legislature was to make laws only in regards with DEFENCE, EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, COMMUNICATION, ANCILLARY. The External Affairs included the implementations of treaties and agreements with other countries, extradition and surrendering of criminals to the then His Majesty outside India.

Pakistan’s Argument on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir– Pakistani argue that the people of “Northern Area’s” now called “Gilgit-Baltistan” revolted against the then Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir on the eve of lapse of British paramountcy in 1947 and willingly joined Pakistan.

On contrary, the popular perception is Gilgit- Baltistan’s annexation was forceful and the consent of people never sought.

UN’s Role – An Unfair Play:

Toput an end to external aggression and armed confrontation India with the hope of a fair and legitimate solution. The issue referred to the United Nation. The UN Security Council major powers equated the aggressor state of Pakistan with the victim state of Jammu and Kashmir. In other attempts, India’s viewpoint clearly disregarded.

A separate constitution and no constitution-

The 45 years of the Cold War and India’s decision of not to be a part of any bloc instead led to the creation of NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) paves an independent path for a long colonised nation. This also frustrated the western nation, joined by Pakistan. The UN security decision seemed to be a deliberate attempt to disregard India’s legitimate position in Kashmir.

In September 1951, the people of J&K elected a Constituent Assembly (members were elected unopposed). It went on to ratify accession of the state to India on February 15, 1954. Finally, led to the assembly drafting a constitution for the state, adopted on November 17, 1956. It came into force subsequently on January 26, 1957. India held it’s free, fair, democratic, and legitimate, and regarded the UN resolutions (related to troops pull out and holding of the plebiscite) as irrelevant and inoperative. This is in view of the prolonged Pakistani non-compliance of the UN resolutions.

For 73 years Gilgit- Baltistan has struggled to get human and civil rights.  It has no constitution unlike Pakistan and administration works according to the Gilgit-Baltistan Order of 2018. This is an executive fiat by Islamabad.

Importance of POK carries factors:

1 Location -Strategic importance shares borders with several countries. Carries a strong geopolitical significance since the Karakoram Highway (KKH) built to connect Pakistan with China via PoK. It’s a gateway to Central Asian republics and to their expanding markets.

According to Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, “access to Afghanistan via the Wakhan Corridor bordering PoK would have given the allied forces a viable option for transporting supplies for NATO forces”

2 Infrastructure development is again very strategic on which China eyes over, apart from its enhanced presence it’s also coming under the influence of Jihad ideology. The resources are rich and exploited by Pakistan recklessly.

3 Socio-Economic situation- After the 2005 earthquake, the ground reality of missing basic amenities was observed by the NGO’s. Even International donors noticed it. The missing apathy of Pakistan came as a rude shock to outsiders. This suggests India an option of policy creation in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

Current Situation Gilgit Baltistan:

Till 1999 – the Northern area continued to be governed as a colony of Pakistan. Later in 2009 ‘Northern Areas’ renamed ‘Gilgit-Baltistan’ under the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order of August 2009. This provided an electoral framework and limited authority.

Gross irregularities reported by International NGOs in regard to the electoral process. Small training camps are set by China to train Pakistan soldiers, given for 45 days.

Currently the region Gilgit- Baltistan demanded status of provincial region. Pushing for a constitutional amendment and to conduct election strongly opposed by India. All this comes after India’s strong move of abrogation of Article 370. If the Provincial status is provided, then Pakistan’s constitutional rights will be applicable. Along with representation in the upper and lower house of Pakistan’s assembly will be provided.

Response:

Recently, we have seen how the grouping of China- Pakistan is strengthening. Whilst Pakistan is also under pressure in regards to or not support the USA as the Taliban takes over Afghanistan.

India’s UNSC presidency is an influential position- Key issues listed by T.S Tirumurti on priority are Maritime Security, Peacekeeping, Counterterrorism.

The status quo that has taken U-turn in BJP’s regime in the matter of J&K. Vocalising the legitimate right on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir doesn’t look unattainable. The situation in Gilgit Baltistan is unwanted by the people. It’s a far-reaching and geographically distant area from India. China’s presence is turning it into an investment area overlooking the welfare of the people. “Gwadar port will receive $793 million under CPEC, the bulk of Chinese investment will take place in G-B ($ 16.129 billion) and PoK ($5.946 billion). Pakistan proposes to build five dams in G-B as part of the “Indus cascade” opines DP Srivastava (retired diplomat) and the author of Forgotten Kashmir in Hindustan times.
