0
"Young Entrepreneurs"

In this week’s Startup Sikkim, we meet Dhananjay Golay, Founder of White Panda (Yangla Food Products), and his Co-Partner Ajit Chettri and Sailesh Sen, which is on a mission to build and support a startup hub in Sikkim.

While Ajit Chettri of Gangtok who was working in Australia for many years with a good-paying Job returned to his hometown Gangtok to do something. After leaving Australia, he went to Kolkota to understand the business model to implement in Sikkim. The lack of entrepreneurship support in Sikkim makes him realise that he wants to do something in Sikkim itself this is where Dhananjay Golay meets Ajit Chettri and Sailesh Sen and discussed upscaling product in Yangla Food Products.

There’s are many scopes in Sikkim like packet food to pickle to other packet eatery items this is where Dhananjay wanted to focus from ground level.

“In 2017 many entrepreneurs from Sikkim tried for CMSS, some left with empty hands and some left with cash but didn’t do anything to support state’s revenue. There has been a lack of entrepreneurship knowledge in Sikkim, this is why locals were seen very less in creating jobs” He said who is also the founder of the company.

In 2020, Dhananjay Golay along with his 2 business partners Ajit Chettri of 6 miles tadong, and Sailesh Sen of Pani house started a factory named White panda chips that produced Chips, Bhujia, Dalmut, and some Eatery in Rangpo’s IBM. The Brand was Named White Panda Chips to make the local brand strong.

Somehow, the brand got strong and the market went up which created 23 workers in which 18 Job was given to local women for long term. His factory even is small venture has now huge production is now going out of state.

“We are focusing to take our product to Bhutan and Nepal if the situation goes normal soon,” Said Dhananjay Golay.

Talking about the pandemic situation and workers of the company, Dhananjay said he still pays salary to them because our company is the only source of income for them, so we have to. They are a group of local women who do very well in the company as soon as lockdown goes over we will resume it again.

Talking about marketing and strategy, “We get lots of order from a local shopkeeper who wants to replace with local product. people loved our product and marketing too went well but the Starting up from IBM Rangpo was very easy for them to communicate all market. The thing is marketing was very tough in the beginning so all trio went to Kolkota again to study about it meeting an experienced businessman and more and returned back.

“On the first day of production, we got 100 pcs of Chips order from the Gangtok store and 70 Pcs from Rangpo next very day we got more than 20 calls regarding the same and our production went up. Starting from local we are giving tough competition to Bingo in Local market” said Sailesh Sen who handle marketing section.

This startup is a self-funded startup from trios that invested their own money. All three raised from their own and they invest it in support the company’s growth to create more employees. Though they are at a loss in the last two months due to Lockdown they still have the potential of growing and taking the market to the national level. Dhananjay Golay wants to make Sikkim self-sustainable in the industry whereas Ajit Chettri also founded Bermoik Turkey farm which is Sikkim’s largest Turkey farm in Bermoik south Sikkim which product Turkey, Local chicken, Kadaknath, and more.

Talking about a local issue in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, Dhananjay suggested young people not to quite a startup thought many Sikkimese people are quitting after 6 months of starting. He also advises other young budding people to become Job creators instead of Jobseeker in Sikkim.

He also suggests the government needs to support the startup ecosystem from root to branch and promoting their product to sell at the national level which will boost the state’s economy too in which Sikkim has many potentials to do something.

Yesterday and Today’s Melamchi, what can we learn from Nepal’s Dam Brust?

0
Melamchi Before and after

A small and beautiful town in Nepal where a major flash flood triggered by heavy rains has devastated the entire town of Melamchi in Nepal under Sindupalchok District.

Melamchi is a municipality town in Nepal that is bigger than Sikkim’s Rangpo Bazar with a population of 50,000. In mid-Melamchi, there’s a small river was flowing in daily sources same as the comparing to river Teesta flowing in Sikkim’s Singtam.

In 2000 Nepal’s Govt bidding a project cost of around $464 Million to construct Melamachi Water supply by constructing a large dam on the upper side of Melamchi. It’s a long-term alternative to ease the chronic water shortage situation within the Kathmandu Valley. The Project is designed to divert about 170 MLD of fresh water to Kathmandu Valley from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk district.

By constructing a 26KM tunnel the project was designed to divert 170 million liters of freshwater daily from the Melamchi River in the Sindhupalchok district to the Kathmandu valley.

In 2007 August, the MoPIT dropped the contract awarded to Severn Trent International because the company was penalized in the UK for poor performance and lack of transparency which can be fatal in the future.

In 2009, after the long wait for the project to restructure, The project was awarded to the Chinese Railway Bureau Group. In July 2009, local groups padlocked the MWSP’s office. It was unlocked in January again 2010 and In August, the construction of the tunnel was initiated and started working.

When earthquakes hit Nepal In 2015 April, Sindupalchok district is said to be the epic center and the Sindhupalchok district was one of the most affected places due to the dam, tunnel, and the massive project was going on there. This delayed the completion of the project further away.

After a long battle of construction, funding, local issue, payment finally after 23 years in 2021 project was completed and on On February 22, wintertime water was released in the main tunnel (Helambu rural municipality-1, Sindhupalchok).

On 15th June 2021 coming to monsoon havoc flood, eight trout farms, a bridge in Nakote, farmlands at Timbu, Chanaute Bazaar, Amahyalmo Buspark, and City Park have been swept away by floods.

It’s not because of rain that caused the flood but the dam is, Normally, when landslides block the river flow, water comes down with a heavy force. But in the case of Melamchi, it seems there must have been some temporary dams that blocked rainwater for some time before it got released. The pattern seems to be repeating as the water level has been fluctuating in the Melamchi river

A landslide blocked the flow of Melamchi river and Indravati river and destroyed a dam causing heavy swelling of the river which swept away a major portion of Melamchi town. Numerous people have been reported missing. Till now 8 bodies have been fished out. The town remains submerged in slush and water, with three-storied buildings being submerged in the muddy waters.
This is perhaps one of the greatest natural calamities of the year.

Dam burst can also be the biggest risk like If the same thing happens in Dikchu Dam entire Sigtam, Majhitar, and Rangpo will be in bigger risk.

We must stop making more Dam in Sikkim and giving priorities to the environment. LANCO project has dug more useless holes in Sikkim which can be bigger trouble in the future.

How Homestays in Sikkim are Dealing with the Pandemic 2.0

Sikkim homestay

While homestay in Sikkim goes down to zero in seasonal time due to the second wave of the pandemic, the homestay owners are in hope situation will be normal as soon as possible, even hundred of are tourist are ringing Hillrooms to know about the reopening of Sikkim.

With the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 taking a toll on the tourism industry in Sikkim, the homestay business across the Sikkim has been severely hit in both rural and urban Sikkim.

Sikkim’s Homestay is such a special experience for the metropolitan guest, rather than the hotel, at first they always search for the homestay a little far away from the crowded town which is all occupied by a hotel.

Before pandemic life was good then for the traveller waking up at 5 PM and arranging everything to go to Changu lake, Nathula, and Baba Mandir which has become memories for many tourists who have planned vacation in 2021.

Zuluk a small hamlet in East Sikkim which only depends on homestay is in hard-hit during this pandemic time, most guests used to stay there because the place is covered by snow-clapped zig-zag road mountain. All people in Zuluk depend on tourism in December 2020 most homestays in Zuluk are trying to create a model that would allow tourists to enjoy the break homestay experience, while also ensuring the safety of both guests and hosts but nevertheless second wave of covid hit it again.

Kunley Bhutia, who runs a homestay in North Sikkim’s Lachung village, says that his all income depends on tourism only. During covid ended in December to April, Kunley’s guests would find the way to their rooms through reference where he used to get 100% of his booking for his room. For covid safety, he even bought his own Xylo to carry tourists from pickup to his homestay.

Homestay always deals with a different model in Sikkim, unlike hotel guest have to book food. There have been a few changes in the way Kunley’s homestay. For instance, earlier his guests could be booking meal in the room. Instead, he encouraged them to self-serve in order to give them the ‘home away from home feeling in Lachung.

Talking about the current situation in Sikkim, he said everywhere is the same in Sikkim and has nothing to say. He just wished normal should return as soon as possible as he is still getting hundreds of calls from his old guest saying when lockdown will open in Sikkim.

Not just Lachung, if we talk about west Sikkim not only hotel and homestay are affected but the local people who used to sell tea and fast food outside famous spot like Sinsore Bridge and other are in badly hit. They largely depend on selling tea and food across the tourist spot to sell their products. Last year’s March to July season was all empty and this year’s also which one is peak season in Sikkim is now troubled due to the pandemic.

Homestay is a huge market among tourists in Sikkim, who also make sure guests will experience like family in Sikkim. “Last months in Dec to March, Covid cases in Sikkim was almost zero and everything was open, we hosted 550 guests and most of them had come to relax after long lockdown across the country,” says homestay owner in East Sikkim.

While many homestay owners in Sikkim are ready to set to host guests if lockdown gets over, but at the same time, some homestay owners don’t think that reopening would be a wise decision right now, given the unpredictable nature of the virus also healthcare has been the crisis in rural Sikkim.

In Pendam east Sikkim, a large number of the guest came to see organic farming, most guests book and stay there for a long week like 2-3 weeks at an affordable cost mostly are big cities couple.

Talking about pradhan homestay in Bharsey west Sikkim, Owner Purushottam Pradhan who owns the largest trekking company in Sikkim “We don’t earn from homestay only. We also do organic farming, potatoes farming which is one of the best in Sikkim, and we take people on treks and expeditions to Hilley and Bharsey. So we have worked on our core competencies and that is helping us sustain right now,” says Pradhan. His organisation in west Sikkim is also spreading awareness among homestay owners in other parts of west Sikkim.

‘Helping everyone in who is in needed, we don’t want to do politics on this’ Said Milan Basnet who is also SKM social media in charge from Rangrang Yangyang.

As the second Covid-19 wave and rain continue to rip across the state Sikkim, two constituencies that don’t have a ruling MLA have gained prominence for helping people be it Corona Positive or landslide or difficult times.

Just a few days ago when the landslide alerted in lower Lingi there was some threat, the house needed to evaluate immediately Mr. Bikash Basnet got this news and he started monitoring immediately and asked his task force team to get to connect with SDM without any fail.

By Yesterday, eight houses were issued with immediate evacuation notice by the SDM to avoid further mishaps, concerning their shelter the department also provided Tarpaulin to them and to build their temporary houses Mr. Om Prakash Thapa has taken his personal initiative.

This all was monitored by the Taskforce of Yangyang lead by Bikash Basnet who is also the confidential secretary of Chief Minister PS Golay.

Though no ruling party MLA exists in Yangyang, Bikash Basnet even helps citizen’s applications to reach out to the chief minister get it signed and even bring it back an application to the person.

I am not alone in this, we are with lots of members who are working in the ground to the ground.”

Along with his member team, has been swiftly responding to SOS messages from across the constituency, arrange ration and food for the needy, medicine, shelter, and even helping elders get vaccinated.

The same goes for the Ravangla constituency where MLA from the ruling party doesn’t exist so SKM CLC president Bishnu Sharma is doing all possibilities he can, Ravangla is one of the most rural places in Sikkim which would have more hard in a difficult time. Anyway CLC and Area Incharge has connected with everyone like Healthcare people, Offical, and everyone.

“This is difficult times and for us, humanitarian work is primary, politics comes later,” said Bishnu Sharma CLC President.

Sikkim Medical Board Chairman Dichen Bhutia said, “Then in the first week of May this year, along with Bishnu Sharma and Kesangla Lashungpa, we held series of meetings to discuss how to tackle this difficult problem in Ravangla. Our first priority was to help the people in need of emergency medicines, food, shelter, and finance. We set up control rooms in our constituencies to receive SOS messages on WhatsApp.”

The main control room for their work is in the Ravangla party office, which coordinates with all state SKM party control rooms which are also monitoring by HCM.

Both Ravangla and Yangyang are doing best compared to other constituencies in the term of communication with peoples, they are sure citizen are okay in a difficult time.

Reacting to this, Bikash Basnet said, “For us, the life of a person is important and not who is the person. Our culture taught us ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ and citizens are our family. So when we received a distress call, we immediately reached to help them no matter where we are no matter how busy we are.”
