Inside Sikkim’s new 5th district, Pakyong

Getting Pakyong declared as a District in east Sikkim was a long pending demand of the residents of the town. Also it was Chief Minister PS Golay’s 2019 election manifesto promise.

Now, fulfilling this election manifesto promise of the SKM, CM PS Golay has declared that Sikkim will have two new districts in the coming days. One in the West, namely Soreng, and one in the East, namely Pakyong, as the 5th and 6th District of the state. This was announced on the occasion of International Yoga Day.

Namcheybong MLA Em Psd Sharma while addressing the media yesterday said that Pakyong has been declared a new district in Sikkim and thanked the PS Golay led Government for the same.

Let’s have a tour of what’s inside the new District Pakyong: –
It will cover three sub-divisions: Pakyong, Rongli, and Rongpo which will cover an area of 404 Sq.Km with a population of 74,583 According to the 2011 census.


It will cover Five Assembly constituencies: 18-west Pendam, 19-Rehnock 20-Chujachen 21-Gnathong Machog, and 22-Namcheybong and 1 Municipality will be Rangpo Nagar Panchyat.

This new district will get Sikkim’s only Airport as well as Railway Sation. The border checkpoint in Rangpo, Rishi and Lingsey will fall under it. Rangpo Checkpost is a gateway of Sikkim connecting with west Bengal.


There will be 11 Revenue circles and 51 revenue blocks and 2 ADC circles in Pakyong and Gangtok.

In the terms of secondary healthcare, Singtam District hospital will be a major one and there is one CHC in Rehnock and Pakyong. Rangpo Machong and Rongli has Primary Health Center PHC.

In the terms of Education, this new district has grabbed one of Sikkim’s top colleges Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, and the other is Himalaya Pharmacy Institue and one new Govt Degree College in Rehnock. Apart from this it shall be home to SICUN and National School of Drama.


About Roads and Highways, this district will have the state’s longest highway NH -10 , NH – 717 A, NH 717B & ROLEP -MENLA NH.

Recalling the rich and glorious history of Pakyong which is the main connection of far rural in East Sikkim, Chief Minister PS Golay said its conversion into a District, which was a long-standing demand of the local people, would ease the hardships of such people and enable them to resolve their administrative problems more seamlessly.

In a recent meeting, The Chief Minister of Sikkim PS Golay has directed the Offical to find a suitable building to start the functioning of the District Administration office in Pakyong soon once the district is formed. The District Collector for the newly carved out district would be appointed soon once it’s formed, he said to The Sikkim Today.

Today, Sadar Police Gangtok have arrested Mr. Sunil Rai, Assistant Engineer (AE) Horticulture Department in connection with Roselene Subba’s suicide case.


It is reported that the accused had incited the victim to commit suicide. The 30-year-old victim had committed suicide on 3rd June at Forest Colony, after which a case had been registered in Sardar Police station regarding an unnatural death. It was later found that a friend of the victim came from Delhi and registered a statement at Gangtok court under section 164 CRPC.

The victim’s friend had stated and provided proof that her friend was a victim of extortion, mental abuse and blackmail by the accused Sunil Rai.


It was due to this reason that she had taken up the step of suicide. After her statement at court, Sadar Police converted the case of Roselene Subba as a criminal case and registered it under IPC section 306 and 383. Meanwhile, the accused had moved to the court for Anticipatory Bail which has been rejected today. The accused has been arrested from his residence at Burtuk, East Sikkim.

NHPC, Teesta-V Power Station, East Sikkim observed 07 th International Yoga Day (IDY) under the theme “Be with “Yoga – Be at Home“ on 21st June, 2021 at Balutar, East Sikkim to raise awareness about the benefits of Yoga in daily life. In wake of COVID-19 restrictions and Ministry of Ayush, Govt of India guidelines, this year, International Yoga Day has been observed in non-congregative manner.

Employees and their family members performed “Yogasanas” at their respective homes from 07 AM to 07:45 AM using Online and digital resources circulated by the Ministry of Ayush, Govt of India. In his message, Shri Sanjay Darbari, General Manager (I/c), Teesta-V Power Station & Teesta-IV HE Project said that International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on 21 st June since 2015 with the objective of building public interest in Yoga and highlighting its importance and contribution towards public health and emotional wellness in the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. He appealed to all the employees to make Yoga an integral part of their life and thereby ensure a healthy life for all.

Sikkim recorded 25 new covid cases and 00 New Death

Sikkim registered 25 new Covid cases on Sunday. The recovered number stand is 16329 and the Positivity Rate PR 14.5%, RR Recovery Rate RR 84.5% as per the health department.

The district-wise figure is 17 cases recorded in the east district, 02 cases recorded in the west district, 04 in the south district, and 02 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 2448, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

Today, Department said that 00 Covid deaths were reported. The Covid deaths toll since last year is 293.

Also, the total cases to date stand at 19321.

The district-wise figure is 57 cases recorded in the east district, 22 cases recorded in the west district, 06 in the south district, and 02 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 2697, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

Today, Department said that 02 Covid deaths were reported. The Covid deaths toll since last year is 293.

Also, the total cases to date stand at 19296.

Once this malware starts functioning, they will steal data from the various connected app in Andriod devives like shopping and banking app in Andriod user. They will collect all personal details from various sources using strain during app function. According to cybersecurity, this malware can also collect OTP.

Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri PS Golay felicitated the Sikkim Cricket team Champions, of U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, Zonal Champion 2019-20 in Majhitar.

The facilitation program was attended by players and staff of the Sikkim cricket team. Sikkim Cricket Association also donated a sum of Rs 15 Lakhs to the Chief Minister Relief Fund.

Chief Minister also addresses the occasion and express gratitude towards the association and assured all possible help to promote sports in the state at the grassroots level he further stated the importance of games and sports for the well-being of mankind especially youths he said that the government will leave no stone unturned for the development of games and sports in the state of Sikkim.

Three dead in Bhamsey road tipper mishap

Tipper mishap in rangpo

Three people died in a tipper mishap at 4th miles Bhamsey Road which is under Rangpo Sub Divison On Sunday Morning.

Rangpo police officer informed that a tipper met with a mishap accident at Bhamsey road, 4th miles which were carrying two people including a driver in Rangpo subdivision of Sikkim.

In this accident, all three people died on the spot including drivers whose names have not been identified by Rangpo Police and an operation is going on.

Sikkim has been witnessing heavy rainfall since the last week. According to sources, the Rangpo-Rorathang stretch was blocked for most of the day at Reshi. later evening NHDCL cleared the spot and traffic got moving only late in the evening.

A huge number of landslides was also reported in Namthang- Namchi Road which blocked Narak Jhora which was cleared by the afternoon.

According to the India Meteorological Department, there will be widespread rains and thunderstorms over Northeast India including Sikkim.

Sikkim registered 151 new Covid cases on Saturday. The recovered number stand is 15917 and the Positivity Rate PR 10.3%, RR Recovery Rate RR 82.8%. as per the health department.

The district-wise figure is 41 cases recorded in the east district, 54 cases recorded in the west district, 51 in the south district, and 05 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 2751, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

Today, Department said that 01 Covid death were reported. The Covid deaths toll since last year is 291.

Brown Sugar Along With 4 Lakhs Cash Seized By Singtam Police

Singtam PS team after obtaining credible information about a drug peddling business being run from a house at Lower Lingzey Busty raided the same and seized 22.5gms brown sugar and Rs. 4 lakhs cash.

Chakra Bahadhur Khadka alias Manoj alias Mawbadi, the owner of the house absconded into the jungle and fled while his wife Geeta Chettri also a partner in the business was arrested.

A massive manhunt was launched by Singtam Police and yesterday midnight, the main accused Manoj and his accomplice Birendra Rawat alias Toofan were arrested from Lumsey. A case under relevant sections of NDPS has been registered.
The Brown Sugar business and consumption seems to have entered the far corners of the state and infiltrated far flungs villages.


It should now be the duty of civil society to curb the menace. With Cooperation from the society, Sikkim Police will surely break this syndicate.
