Sikkim recorded 36 new covid cases and 00 New Death

Sikkim registered 36 new Covid cases on Saturday. The recovered number stand is 14615 Positivity rate 11.5% Recovery rate 79.3% as per health department.

The district-wise figure is 29 cases recorded in the east district, 06 cases recorded in the west district, 01 in the south district, and 00 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 3306, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

On Sunday, Department said that 00 Covid death were reported. The Covid deaths toll since last year is 281.

Bhaichung Bhutia’s effigy burning case, 9 Arrested

Nine women were arrested by Namchi Police today morning in a case related to burning Bhaichung Bhutia’s effigy in Namchi on 9 June 2021.

Last day, Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia made a statement against 300 bedded hospital which was recently laid the foundation by the Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri Prem Singh Golay. Whereas, Bhaichung’s statement create protests in Namchi Bazar which was lead by south women morcha.

Speaking to The Sikkim Today Namchi Police Prabin Gurung south DIG told, nine women were arrested under violating the disaster management act.

And the case has been registered against them by District Collector in Namchi Police Station under case number 18/2021 under section 188/34 IPC, read with section 51 of Disaster Management Act 2005 for the violation of the law.

In protest, there were 19 women involved out of which nine were arrested by The Sikkim Police today morning and investigation is still going on.

Sikkim registered 157 new Covid cases on Saturday. The recovered number stand is 14334 Positivity rate 11.9% Recovery rate 77.8% as per health department.

The district-wise figure is 77 cases recorded in the east district, 37 cases recorded in the west district, 43 in the south district, and 01 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 3553, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

On Sunday, Department said that 00 Covid death were reported. The Covid deaths toll since last year is 281.

Mirabai Chanu of Manipur qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai Chanu an Indian weightlifter who held from Northeast’s Manipur has qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. She would be competing in the 49 kg category on Weightlifting.

26-year-old Mirabai Chanu held from Manipur is a three-time gold medalist. She won the bronze medal during the Asian Championship in Tashkent this April 2021. She has qualified, based on her IWF’s Absolute Ranking list, where she is ranked second in the 49kg category.

This will be Chanu’s Second time in Olympics, she has also participated in the 2016 Rio D Janeiro Olympics but failed to make it, where she completed in 6th while failing to lift in any attempt in Clean & Jerk.

Drug busted at Rangpo, 1 person held

In a major crackdown against the drug trade, a team led by Rangpo Police busted one person who was carrying the drug in a heavy light vehicle.

According to Rangpo Police sources, One Tata bearing Registration No. SK01D 0784 driven by alleged Prabin Chettri of Pakyong East Sikkim. Police found a box while searching in a vehicle. As soon as the police found the box, they found 65 bottles of Ownrex cough syrup, 328 capsules of N-10, and 08 tablets of N-10 were seized by police on the spot.

A crackdown was launched soon after and truck drivers were apprehended on Sunday morning. This all happened during routine vehicle checking near the Sikkim Westbengal border, the behavior of occupants was found to be suspicious.

A case under SADA and NDPS was registered against Prabin Chettri.

Woman commits suicide in gangtok, the family claims it’s murder

A 30-year woman from Gangtok committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Development Area Gangtok, under Gangtok police station, on Friday 11th June. According to sources, she had a long-running dispute with her husband, which pushed her into taking the extreme step. A case was registered after her family alleged murder in their complaint. Whereas the husband claims it’s false and allegation.

Speaking to The Sikkim Today coverage yesterday, Her family told her that she had married a man named Sapan Giri. Deceased’s sisters Seema Chettri and Prakriti Chettri who had a conference with The Sikkim Today said she did not commit suicide she is murdered by her husband.

According to police sources, Ambika Chettri (30) was found hanging in her husband’s house in the Development area, which was locked from inside. However, it was alerted to the police. A team from Gangtok police station reached the spot and carried out the initial investigation.

The deceased’s sister also accused Sapan Giri of beating and torturing her “ever since she got married to him she was badly treated mentally and physically torture by her husband even during her mensuration time he used to beat her.”

Her family members maintain that the woman was being mentally and physically abused by her husband all the time. They have refused to believe that it was a suicide and have demanded a strong investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, in The Sikkim Today after the report went viral citizens strongly called it clear domestic violence against women and seeking justice for women.

Police said, “A probe is being conducted. Action will be taken according to the report”

Mizoram landslide, 4 children killed including a twin sister

In a tragic incident, four members of a family including two minors-a 5 & 3yr old boy and a 16-year-old twin sister, were killed last night in a house that collapsed due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains at Thuampui Veng, in Aizawl’s suburbs.

At least four members of the family, including two minor children, were killed in Mizoram’s Thuampui Veng village on Friday night at 9:30 PM after their homes collapsed following a landslide, The Sikkim Today reported.

“The debris of landslides fell over the houses in Thuampui Veng which is in Aziwal incident happened at 9:30 PM on Friday, trapping the occupants inside,” District Disaster Management told.

It was a building in terrain, in which a seven-member used to stay, was swept away by the retaining wall that collapsed due to landslide triggered by heavy rains, near neighborhood said.

Six of the seven family members were there in the house at the time of the incident happened, they said.

State Disaster Management recovered four bodies of children age between 3 and 16, meanwhile, the head of the family, Lalbiakzuala who is 75 years old escaped from the debris and another member was rescued alive. 

A 16-year-old girl killed was twin sister whose body was recovered on Saturday morning at 6 am.

The district-wise figure is 71 cases recorded in the east district, 09 cases recorded in the west district, 83 in the south district, and 04 cases in the north district. The total Covid active case in the state is 3783, as per the health department, Government of Sikkim.

According to sources, he was working in India for a Chinese intelligence agency for long years. He’s being interrogated deeply as all intelligence agencies are working on this.

A few days ago his business partner was arrested in India. Suspicious about their movement, the Border Security Force (BSF) detained them at the Malda and later handed them to the police, officials said.

As per the BSF Sources, one laptop, three mobile phones, Indian, Bangladeshi, US currency, one Chinese Passport with a Bangladeshi visa were recovered from him. The matter is being investigated, they said
