The Serial Position Effect

The Serial Position Effect

Did it ever happen to you that whenever you start learning and after sometime when you try to think of something, the only thing that comes to your mind at first was either be the starting or the ending of the thing that you have read?

Well, the studies have called it “The Serial Position Effect”.

WHAT IS THE SERIAL POSITION EFFECT?

The Serial Position Effect describes the affect on our memory by the position of information in a sequence. It suggests that we best remember the first and last items in a series. Also, find it hard to remember the middle items. [thedecisionlab.com]

According to the definition, there are chances that you will probably remember the beginning and the ending of the information that you have read. The middle part of the information will be slightly hazy to remember. All of this is because of the information’s sequence.

However, it is mostly not the case with many people. There is no 100% guarantee for this.

WHY IT HAPPENS?

The serial position effect is caused by the primacy effect and the recency effect.

The primacy effect is the ability of our brain to remember information that is at the beginning of the series and the recency effect is the ability to remember information that is the most recent.

Let us take an example:

You are going to a grocery store and you have made a list of all the items that you have to buy. Now the things that you have written first are in your mind, this is the primacy effect and the things that you have written at the end are also on your mind, this is because of the recency effect.

It is believed that the primacy effect occurs because those items are in our long-term memory. Further, as the series continues it becomes difficult for our brain to remember things. Just like this recency effect occurs because the items are stored in our short-term memory. After all, that information is the most recent information.

That is why the items that are part of the middle series are hard to remember because they are not in our short-term memory. As the series continues it becomes hard for the brain to remember all the items. Thus, they take long enough time to store in our long-term memory also.

HOW TO AVOID IT?

Making lists for everything every time is not at all practical and is time-consuming also. One way to avoid this problem is to put your most important information at the beginning and the end. This way you have all the important information in your mind. Another way is to reorder your information every time.

For example: imagine that you are trying to remember five facts about a particular phenomenon for an exam. Instead of studying the five facts in the same order repeatedly, you might want to write down the facts in a different order the second time you go through them. That means that different items will be at the beginning, middle and end of the series, which gives you a better chance of remembering more items since more of them will have held a place at the beginning and end. Social Media impact on teenagers’ Mental Health

Social Media impact on health

Progressing towards the Digital World & Social media:

We live in a digital Era. Time has changed a lot in terms of technology. There used to be a time when mobile phones were used only for communication. But now it is much more than that. The shift of population from simple mobile phones to smartphones have completely changed the world and the way it functions. Earlier, there was “No social media and only social gatherings” but now “No social gatherings and only social media”.

The Shift from a Simple Past:

Let’s go back to the time and recall the situation before. The first thing that comes to mind in this recalling process is that how simple life used to be. People were not that much familiar with the World Wide Web. There were no insignificant urges to put each detail of your life in front of the public. Life was pretty private and time was spent with family and not with social media family. People used to fulfil their appetite with food and not with likes and comments on their social media posts. Everything used to be real and not reel.

The Present Scenario:

Now let’s get back to the present-day scenario. People are completely dependent on social media, some for entertainment some for business purposes. It’s is however a good invention if used for business purposes, sharing verified news and the latest information. Also, a good medium to connect with people. But everything comes with its advantages and disadvantages.

Drawbacks:

The age group severely affected by the disadvantages of it are teenagers. Teenagers nowadays struggle to have a realistic approach towards life. They believe that everything shown on social media is real. However, they are unaware of the fact that “social media is not the reality”.

According to a study, it has been observed that it leads to unconfident youth. They are always insecure about their physical appearance. They see Instagram posts of the popular influencers with perfect gym bodies and feel uncomfortable with their body type. The high level of editing used in the pictures of influencers overpowers the real world. The blemish-free glass skin is all those teenagers these days desire. Almost ignoring the fact that human skin is not supposed to be perfect.

Further, many cases have been found, in which some teenagers felt anxiety and depression when their social media posts didn’t get a good number of likes. While, some also believed to fake their lifestyle for the sake of social media life or to gain popularity. This level of unrealistic approach towards life is a threat to teenager’s mental health.

Above all, teenagers must be taught about the real and fake world. They should be provided counselling sessions on how to be confident in their skin. They should learn the fact that the majority of social media posts are completely edited just to gain likes and influence people all over the world. Conclusively, to achieve something teenagers need to work hard in reality and not for the sake of showing it publicly.

How to Improve Self-Confidence

The ability to believe in yourself and your abilities is self-confidence. In other words, enjoying your life and knowing you have control over it are signposts of acceptance and trust in yourself. It is a positive thing to know one’s strengths and weaknesses and to see oneself positively. It is a quality that you possess that allows you to set realistic expectations and goals, communicate assertively, and handle criticism well.

In contrast, low self-confidence might cause you to feel full of self-doubt, to be passive or submissive, or to have difficulty trusting others. There may be feelings of inferiority, unlove, or vulnerability when faced with criticism. It may be difficult to feel confident in certain situations. Some areas, like academics, may inspire high levels of confidence, but other areas, such as relationships, may not.

It is more important for a person to perceive themselves as confident than to be capable, according to self-confidence. We all form perceptions based upon our thoughts, and they are sometimes flawed.

Self-confidence might be affected by different experiences, such as growing up in an unsupportive and critical environment, being recently separated from your friends and family, having too harsh an opinion of yourself, or judging yourself harshly. When you lack self-confidence, you tend to think incorrectly.

Self-confidence: How To Boost It

  • Your strengths should be recognized and emphasized. You should reward and praise your efforts for making progress.
  • Be kind and compassionate to yourself when you encounter obstacles. Failure is not the end of the world.
  • Don’t let past negative experiences control your future.
  • Feel free to express your beliefs, feelings, and needs.
  • If you are feeling strongly emotional, you should slow down and think logically about the situation.
  • Don’t make assumptions about yourself, other people, or situations

Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities and you can do it.

"Regular Exercise"

Healthy Eating has Visible effects:

Our body is a mechanism that functions on eating and moving physically from one place to another. To keep this living mechanism fit and active you have to take care of what you put inside it. Whatever goes inside is completely visible in the outer appearance of your body. If you will eat healthily and exercise properly, it would be visible in outer appearance. If you don’t you will look like an unhealthy lazy potato. Keeping our body fit and active by engaging it in any kind of physical activity is crucial.

How important is Exercising?

A study found that exercising regularly for at least 25 minutes can decrease deaths from natural causes to some extent. The study also indicates that a higher level of regular physical exercise compared to inactivity was advantageous. This was even in contaminated areas, although the lower exposure to pollution was better. Regardless of whether you are exposed to air pollution or not, ordinary exercise will reduce the risk of death. Therefore, habitual exercise should be used to improve health. The strategy is promoted to include people living in relatively polluted areas.

It was found that high levels of habitual exercise and low exposure to air pollution were linked to a lower risk of death from natural causes. While low levels of routine exercise and high exposure were linked to a higher risk of death. This study complements several other smaller studies conducted in the United States, Denmark, and Hong Kong that found that regular exercise is beneficial even in contaminated areas.

According to the researcher, further research is needed in areas with high levels of air pollution to verify the applicability of the results. The research emphasizes the importance of controlling air pollution, such as reducing the harmful effects of air pollution and maximizing the positive effects of regular exercise.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular Diseases:

There used to be a time when heart-related diseases were only associated with old people or age 30 plus. Here comes the time when all age groups are equally targets of cardiovascular diseases. In India, every third person is suffering from high cholesterol issues and obesity. We can’t only blame wrong eating habits for resulting in this as stress and lack of time to take care of our bodies equally contribute to making our hearts unhealthy. India already records one-fifth of deaths worldwide, caused by cardiovascular diseases. This reflects in the younger population as well, with an age-standardized death rate of 272 per 1,00,000 population as compared to the global average of 235.

A busy and hectic life schedule has become new normal for both children and adults. The pandemic has also contributed a lot to unhealthy lifestyles. People spend more time sitting online rather than doing physical movement of their bodies. Especially being an Indian we all love extra oil and butter in our food which doubles the risk of heart-related problems. The increased intake of junk food in today’s generation has made them more prone to cardiovascular diseases.

A 2019 study by Saffolalife found that in top cities, age groups between 30 and 40, 58% of people who do not exercise regularly have a higher risk of heart disease. Even so, 92% of them do not think that lack of exercise is one of the three major risk factors for heart disease. This lack of awareness makes the problem worse.

What can be done?

Fortunately, we can control our health to some extent. After all, it’s your own body and you can try your level best to keep it fit and healthy. It is not difficult to take care of your heart. Once you understand the risk factors, you can take the right steps to reduce their effects. Simple changes in your diet and lifestyle can indeed make a difference.

The easiest and first step to ensure good health is to get regular check-ups done so that you can know about the disease at its earliest. This allows you to recognize symptoms earlier and take corrective actions immediately. Develop healthy lifestyle habits, such as walking briskly for about 20 minutes a day, drinking more water and avoiding food that contains more oil than usual. Try to take a break between working hours and perform deep breathing exercises.

Exercising doesn’t mean you have to spend money on expensive gyms. Doing some yoga, walking or any other physical activity such as dancing will do wonders for your health. Try doing exercises that help to reduce stress. Start doing activities that interest your soul to make you happy from the inside. Sleep on time get up early and schedule your lifecycle. Make simple and easy changes to your diet, such as B. Eat a serving of raw fruits and vegetables at snack time every day. Try adding heart-healthy ingredients such as nuts, leafy green vegetables, avocados, and oats. Using heart-healthy oils can also be a great and easy change.

The day we will learn to run our mind and body in the correct order, will be the day our heart will win!

THE TRUMAN SHOW

At some point in our lives, we all wanted to be a part of reality shows like The Truman Show. Even at least, say we all wanted to be popular, we want people to watch us. Many of us in our childhood would have believed that we all are a part of reality shows and people are watching us – no worries, no one is judging us.

However as we all grew up world’s reality hit us hard, we realized that was all just our childish imagination.

Truman Show Delusion:

I know you all are a little mesmerized by my lines above. Well, I am not sure how many of you are aware of the term “Truman Show Delusion”.

Truman Show Delusion: The Truman Show, a comedy-drama film made in 1998, directed by Peter Weir. In this movie, there is a man with an ordinary life, an ordinary wife and ordinary neighbors but one day he found out that his life is a TV show and all people around him was mere actors.

Many people have liked this movie while other people relate them to this movie. “Truman Show” syndrome is a psychological condition in which people are convinced that they are living in a reality TV show world, that everybody around them is an actor with scripts to enact their lines. They believe that their whole life is a reality show and people are watching them every second.

The syndrome name comes from the movie The Truman Show. It was coined by Joel Gold and his brother Ian gold, NYU psychiatrist, in 2008.

Gold said he first came across a patient with what he and his brother would later label the “Truman Show delusion” at Bellevue Hospital in New York City around Halloween 2003.

“The first time I experienced it, I was fascinated but didn’t think much of it,” he said. “By the time we got to five patients, I said, ‘this is something unusual.'”

Gold spent the next 11 years studying the phenomenon – a type of paranoid psychosis. He and his brother published a book, “Suspicious Minds,” in 2014 that details the ways delusion manifest in psychiatric patients.

·      WHY DO PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THIS?

Ever wondered what are factors caused people to think like that? Well, according to researchers, these delusions are more likely to happen to those who wants to stand out in a crowd, who loves to become the centre of attention.

Above all, such delusions make the lives of people suffering from the more difficult. Treatment options are also limited as there is no particular diagnosis for it. The treatment for this delusion is the same as the treatment for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder which is hospitalization, medication, close observation. However, there is no guarantee of recovery.
