Several websites including Paytm, Airbnb go down in the Edge DNS glitch

Yesterday night, a glitch in the Akamai’s Edge DNS took a major chunk of websites down with it. .

Yesterday night, a glitch in the Akamai’s Edge DNS took a major chunk of websites down with it. Popular websites including Paytm, Zomato, Airbnb, HBO were also affected by the issue. A message of “Service Unavailable- DNS failure” was been displayed to the users trying to access those sites. As per the DownDetector website, the glitch appeared to arise at around 9 pm(IST) on Thursday night and the Edge DNS issue was fixed by Akamai Technologies at 10:20 pm on the same night. Several news portals were also affected by this glitch.

Akamai Technologies, the company whose product Edge DNS faced an issue confirmed that the outage was not caused due to a cyber-attack. The number of internet services disruptions tells us that the level of traffic being handled by Akamai Technologies. Last month, Fastly CDN, a company working in a similar field as Akamai had also faced a similar issue which made websites like Twitter, Reddit goes down. Internet disruptions have become common since the pandemic had begun last year, primarily due to the increased internet traffic.

 What is DNS?

DNS or Domain Name System is like the directory of the internet, it translates whatever we search to IP addresses so that the web browsers can locate and load the servers/ resources/ pages we have demanded. Each device connecting to the internet has a unique address called an IP address, the DNS services eliminate the need for users to learn IP addresses to find the desired internet devices.

A few hours ago, Akamai said it fix for the issue it was having with its Edge DNS service. Many of the websites that were affected by the outage are starting to come back online, including PSN. Downdetector is also tracking fewer outage reports.

Later they wrote on Twitter – “We have implemented a fix for this issue and based on current observations, the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.”

Again they wrote, “Akamai is experiencing a service disruption. We are actively investigating the issue and will provide an update in 30 minutes”.

The People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam. It is connected by Taiwan Strait with the East China Sea and by Luzon Strait with the Philippine Sea. It contains numerous shoals, reefs, atolls, and islands. The Paracel Islands, the Spratly Islands, and the Scarborough Shoal are the most important.

The Chinese assertions within the South China Sea and its hegemonic ambitions became an explanation for concern for peace and stability within the region.

Significance of South China Sea

The geographic location of the SCS is strategically important. As it links the Indian Ocean to the Pacific and maybe a critical shipping channel. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), one-third of the global shipping passes through it, carrying trillions of trade. Roughly two-thirds of South Korea’s energy supplies, nearly 60% of Japan’s and Taiwan’s energy supplies, and 80% of China’s petroleum imports come through the South China Sea.

SCS is believed to possess huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed. According to the World Bank, the South China Sea holds proven oil reserves of a minimum of seven billion barrels and an estimated 900 trillion cubic feet of gas.

The Strait of Malacca connects the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and is

900 km long and is additionally a prominent trade route between East Asia and West Asia-Europe. The Strait of Malacca is a choke point, it is always in the interest of great powers to control such a strategic location. Thus, thanks to the presence of this chokepoint, SCS assumes much importance for China and other regional countries. In the context of naval diplomacy, it’s a geopolitical term wont to signify a world strait whose control could potentially affect commercial transit.

Encroaching Exclusive Economic Zone

(EEZ)

The tribunal issued a choice finding that there’s no legal basis to say “historic rights” to islands within the South China Sea and therefore the 9-dash line is inconsistent with the Convention on the Law of the ocean. However, China refused to abide by the judgment.

China has asserted a maritime claim (based on historic rights) to an outsized part of the South China Sea that’s not according to international law. The SCS has quite a dozen overlapping EEZ in accordance with the 1982 Convention on the Law of the ocean (UNCLOS) a world treaty that sets out important maritime rules). As per UNCLOS, countries in their EEZ can explore oil, natural resource, living and non-living natural resources including resources under the ocean, seabed, and subsoil.

There are many interconnected disputes over who is responsible for the varied islands, rocks, shoals, and reefs scattered throughout the South China Sea waters.

The Paracel Islands are claimed by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The Spratly Islands are claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, and the Philippines. The Scarborough Shoal is claimed by the Philippines, China, and Taiwan.

Further, since 2010, China has been converting uninhabited islets into artificial islets to bring them under UNCLOS (examples would come with Haven Reef, Johnson South Reef, and Fiery Cross Reef).

China has been changing the dimensions and structure of the reefs by modifying their physical land features. It has also established airstrips on Parcel and Spratly.

However, China’s increasing ability to make a decision and expand its role within the South China Sea has compelled India to reevaluate its approach on the difficulty. As a key element of the Act East Policy, India has started internationalizing disputes in the Indo-Pacific region to psychological pressure on irritants (the recent mentions of

South China Sea dispute in bilateral statements between India-USA and India-France is a testimony to the fact). Further, India is aggressively using the soft tool of Buddhist legacy to reclaim the unique historical leverage to make a strong bond with the Southeast Asian region. India has also deployed its navy with Vietnam within the South China Sea for the cover of sea lanes of communication (SLOC), denying China any space for assertion. Also, India is a component of the Quad Initiative (India, US, Japan, Australia) and the lynchpin of the Indo-Pacific narrative. These initiatives are viewed as a containment strategy by China. Today’s world comprises extensive interconnections of countries and people. Any particular conflict, therefore, has the potential to possess a ripple effect on countries and institutions aside from the direct stakeholders. China must realize that it cannot continue with its bullying tactics and win the trust of its neighbors and respect from the International Community. It is therefore desirable that all the countries of this region should abide by rule-based international.

There are instances that have been made to create more violence in the country there can be the rise of COVID cases as the population of South Africa is around 60 million and the country is also in the middle of facing the worst situation of COVID yet. This week on Monday Ramaphosa addressed the nation on TV and given the statement that “Our vaccination program has been severely disrupted just as it is gaining momentum” he also announced that there will be marshaling of military forces. In addition to that, he also that if the violence gets to its peak then there will be disruption of food and health services for upcoming weeks. The ex-president Jacob Zuma who was in the power from 2009 to 2018 was arrested due to some reasons and coincidentally the two days later the riots have been started.

When did the riots take place?

Protests broke out last Friday, just two days after Zuma’s arrest. KwaZulu- Natal is the home province of Zuma with the highest second biggest province in South Africa by the population where around 11 million live in this province. At the time when Zuma has to come out of his residence to handing himself, but before that, his supporters came into support and amassed in front of Zuma’s residence so that they can prevent the officials or the authorities from arresting him.

Supporters of Zuma have blocked the roads and started putting fire to the property such as in the shopping centers and factories and some people started looting in distributer centers of LG and Samsung. One Video Clip got viral which is showing that a woman was been forced to throw her baby from a burning building to a crowd below. Protests got spread to other provinces such as Gutenberg which is known as the smallest province in terms of landmass and biggest in terms of population and its capital is Johannesburg, the country’s financial center. In that people started attacking and looting supermarkets and stores, the food trucks were set up on fire and the national highway closed off. After that local police came into effect and simultaneously the president Cyril Ramaphosa stated the order to military armed forces to start taking action in both the provinces, in which 1200 people were arrested.

What is the reason for Rioting? 

This will be a dicey question for upcoming months, maybe there is something serious issues that can be overwhelmed. Explanations may include political violence, seek for looting, or dissatisfaction with poverty and discrimination.

Many of the blaming that the main reason for the violence is the Zuma’s family and the other reason is Zuma’s daughter compared the leadership of President Ramaphosa with Apartheid-era leadership and she also encouraged her 1 lakh, Twitter followers, to create violence all over the province by applauding the pictures and video of arson and obstruction. The Jacob G Zuma Foundation seemingly condoned the violent protests tweeting: The Foundation has noted the reactive righteous anger of the people of South Africa which others have seemed as violence. When they approached to the people and the people said that they are reacting to the violent provocation melted and betrayed by the confinement of President Zuma by trial.

It later tweeted that: “Peace and stability in South Africa are directly linked to the release of President Zuma with immediate effect.”

After this, Zuma’s supporters gathered in front of Zuma’s residence so that authorities can’t able to arrest him and South Africa must know their position because the country is in the mid of COVID cases as on July 13, 51 thousand COVID tests have been done out of which 12,500 have been positive which means out of every four tests one is positive and also South Africa has the highest unemployment rate in the world which is 32% and also in terms of crime rates South Africa has been in top named lists. The World Bank called South Africa the world’s most unequal country in the world in 2018 till now. President Ramaphosa said that these may be the reasons for looting driven by hardships and poverty. He also said that “the poor and the marginalized bear the ultimate brunt of the destruction that is underway.

Gangtok, July 15 (IPR): Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang chaired a high-level meeting at Samman Bhawan, Gangtok, today, to review the lockdown in the State and to deliberate on the way ahead.

The meeting had the presence and participation of Hon’ble Ministers, DGP, Additional Chief Secretaries, Heads of Departments, senior Government officials, District Collectors, Chief Medical Officers, Health Department officials, ADCs (Development), and officers of the Covid-19 Management Group.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister issued strict directives to the District Collectors, SPs, ADC Development and BDOs to ensure that strict measures are adopted to contain the spread of Covid-19 any further. He called for the need to review the containment measures. He further called for emphasis on home quarantine even for people who move out of their ward or village. He urged the District Administration to review the paid quarantine facilities for people entering the State through the inter-state borders. He further urged the Health Department officials to enhance mass testing.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister lauded the Health Department for the successful implementation of the vaccination programme. He called for additional measures to ensure 100% coverage.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister directed the Tourism Department to facilitate the smooth movement of tourists into the State, duly ensuring that all safety measures are strictly followed. Likewise, Labour Department and Police Department were directed to strictly monitor the movement of labour force into the State.

During the interactive session that followed the lockdown, the District Collectors presented the status of Covid-19 in their respective districts.

Director, Health Services, Dr. Sonam T. Ethenpa apprised about the status of vaccination and testing. He informed the media that mobile testing will commence next week.

Likewise, Chief Medical Officers of the four districts presented the statistics and ground situation under their respective jurisdiction.

Director-General of Police, Shri S.D. Negi and Special DGP, Law & Order, Shri Akshay Sachdeva also provided their inputs during the meeting.

DG-cum-Secretary Health, Dr. Pempa T. Bhutia summed up the present scenario from the medical point of view. He shared statistics from the past few months and presented a comparative report. He was also apprised about the steps being taken to enhance the existing health infrastructure, especially testing laboratories. He also presented the status of vaccination in the State.

Director, Panchayat, RDD, Shri Prabhakar Rai presented a brief report of the activities being carried out by rural development functionaries to contain Covid-19.

DIG Range Shri Prawin Gurung also placed his suggestions in the meeting. He appealed to the line departments and concerned agencies to coordinate and cooperate with the Police for enforcement of the laid down rules and guidelines.

Likewise, ADCs (Development) of all the four districts also placed their feedback and suggestions in the meeting.

M.S. STNM Hospital Dr. K.B. Gurung gave a brief outline of the caseload in the Hospital and the level of preparedness.

General Manager, SNT, and Member Covid Management Group, Shri Karma Namgyal Bhutia presented the status report of the availability of medical Oxygen in the State. He also gave a brief background of the accomplishment of the State Government in commissioning the required medical Oxygen for the State.

After detailed discussion, the following broad decisions were taken by the meeting:

  1. Complete ban for one month would be enforced on all socio-religious and entertainment related activities like marriage, pujas and birthday parties and other get-togethers, both in urban and rural areas.
  2. Keeping in view the present situation, the practice of serving food and beverages during funerals and last rites will be restricted during lockdown.
  3. IEC and mass awareness on Covid Appropriate Behaviour will be upscaled. It was decided to enforce strict penalties on people and establishments violating Covid-19 guidelines.
  4. The meeting also decided to put a complete end to the practice of issuing special permits, other than for health and police personnel.
  5. Police will strictly enforce the odd-even rule for vehicles without any exception during lockdown.
  6. After reviewing the containment measures, the meeting decided that now onwards, if any person in a ward or village tests positive, the entire ward will be declared a containment zone and strict measures will be enforced to prevent further spread. In case of urban or semi urban areas or towns, the entire building will be contained during lockdown.
  7. Any relief work, social or medical service should compulsorily be routed through the District Collectors.
  8. Only in-house puja or rituals will be allowed in religious places. There will be complete ban on visitors to any religious place or institution.

The meeting concluded with the concluding remarks by Principal Secretary, Home Department, Shri R. Telang. He thanked the Hon’ble Chief Minister for his guidance and for the timely decisions. He thanked everyone present in the meeting for their contribution.

Mansukh Mandaviya, the new Union Health Minister recently tweeted a photo of his daughter with the caption, “My daughter, my pride! Reportedly, Rajya Sabha MP and the new Health Minister Mandaviya’s daughter is a final year MBBS student of Vadodara Medical College, Gujarat. She has been assisting the junior doctors and has now started rendering service in a COVID Care Centre amidst the pandemic.

Reports say that in the past week, Mandaviya visited the facilities of three vaccine-makers — Zydus and Bharat Biotech in Ahmedabad and Serum Institute of India in Pune, albeit in his capacity as the minister of state for chemicals and fertilizers to ramp up indigenous vaccines in the long run. Earlier he came to the limelight when he rode a bicycle to the Parliament a few years back to promote a green environment.

Mandaviya was the youngest MLA to enter Gujarat Assembly at the age of 28 years in 2002. He also served as the Chairman of Gujarat Agro Industries Limited.

He is a Veterinary doctor by Profession and also has a Masters degree in Political Science from a reputed university. He is known to be an active social worker in various fields while being in Gujarat and had worked to promote menstrual hygiene immensely which was recognized by UNICEF in 2015. He delivered a speech in English in the General Assembly of the UN for the same that year.

Mandaviya was first elected as Rajya Sabha MP in 2012 and re-elected again in 2018 to finally get promoted as the Union Health Minister now in the recent Cabinet reshuffle in July 2021 and has a tough road ahead to ramp up vaccinations as well as tackle any further waves of the pandemic.
